• 1809 Tapps Arms opens
• 1812 Lewis Tregonwell and his wife move into their new home. They are regarded as the towns first inhabitants.
• 1820 Tregonwell leases his home to the Marchioness of Exeter, hence the current name of the property the Exeter Hotel.
• 1836 Sir George Tapps-Gervis appoints Benjamin Ferrey to design him a seaside resort
• 1837-40 Westover villas built for summer lettings
• 1838 Bath Hotel built and Westover Gardens laid out
• 1839 Tregonwell Arms (the former Tapps Arms) begins to act as post office
• 1840 The Southampton to Weymouth stagecoach begins to call at Bournemouth
• 1845 St. Peter's Church is consecrated
• 1849 The wooden bridge over the Bourne replaced with a brick bridge
• 1851 Population 695
• 1855 A wooden jetty was built into the sea
• 1856 Bournemouth Improvement Act passed by Parliament. The Act called for a board of 13 Commissioners, of which the Lord of the Manor and his nominee were to be non-elected members, with the rest being subject to election. These Commissioners were responsible for paving; cleaning and lighting the streets; provide sewers and drains; found a police force
• 1859 A dispensary was formed where the poor could obtain free medicines and medical care.
• 1861 Population 1,707 wooden jetty replaced by proper pier
• 1864 The town gains gas street lighting.
• 1866 Piped water supply installed
• 1870 The railway reaches Bournemouth and a volunteer fire brigade was formed
• 1872 Bournemouth Arcade completed

World War II Air Raids

What is the source for the statement 219 people were killed in air raids in Bournemouth? The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records 175 civilian deaths in Bournemouth County Borough area due to enemy action, dates ranging from 1940 to 1944.Cloptonson (talk) 13:46, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
