Dates[edit]

The article states (6 July 1862 – 2 March 1872) and also that he died in 1921. Some mistake surely ? RGCorris (talk) 09:29, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes a mistake. Fixed. Railfan23 (talk) 11:25, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Cousin[edit]

How was Winston Churchill a "first cousin" ? Herbert was the son of the 5th Marquess of Londonderry and Mary Cornelia Edwards, whereas Churchill was the son of Lord Randolph Churchill and Jennie Jerome. RGCorris (talk) 09:35, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Frances Anne Spencer-Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough was George Vane-Tempest, 5th Marquess of Londonderry's sister and mother of Lord Randolph Henry Spencer-Churchill Railfan23 (talk) 11:25, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
So Lord Randolph was Herbert's first cousin, not Winston. RGCorris (talk) 12:39, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The cited source describes them as first cousins. Railfan23 (talk) 12:45, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Cousin has their relationship as first cousins once removed. RGCorris (talk) 12:46, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The cited source (Manchester, page 771) states "On January 26 his first cousin once removed, Lord Herbert Vane-Tempest, died in a train accident. Lord Herbert had been a bachelor; Winston, as his heir, came into several thousand pounds." I will therefore amend the article accordingly. RGCorris (talk) 14:30, 29 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Plas Machynlleth[edit]

The Plas was given to the townspeople of Machynlleth by the 7th Marquess, Lord Herbert's nephew. If Lord Herbert had owned it personally and Churchill was his heir, then at what point did it revert back to the Londonderry family ? RGCorris (talk) 12:54, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The history of the Plas is complex and unclear, at least as far as I've read about it. It would be very useful to find good sources that we can use to accurately describe it's history. Railfan23 (talk) 21:28, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Visions of Glory[edit]

The Last Lion: Winston Spencer Churchill states that this book was published in 1983, not 2012. RGCorris (talk) 15:21, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

From the article "However, before his death, Manchester had selected Paul Reid to complete it, and the final volume was published in November 2012." Railfan23 (talk) 21:26, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The article states that volume 3, "Defender of the Realm, 1940–1965" was published in 2012; your reference is to volume 1, "Visions of Glory, 1874 - 1932" which was published in 1983. RGCorris (talk) 04:42, 13 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This is the source on Google Books which gives a 2012 publication date. It looks like all 3 volumes were republished in 2012, and that's the version on Google books. Feel free to change the date to 1983 if you feel strongly about it. Railfan23 (talk) 04:48, 13 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
