Family circumstances[edit]

The following is speculative and cannot go in the article, but may be worth recording separately. From the census records it appears that Symonds was an only child. His father died in 1933 leaving the very substantial sum of £122,972 (in terms of average earnings that equates to £24m in current terms); when Symonds's mother died eight years later she left the much more modest sum of £6341. It is a reasonable assumption (but no more than that) that Symonds came into a large share of his father's wealth in 1933, two years before deciding to retire at the age of 50. When Symonds died in 1958 his estate was valued at £78,515 (in current terms about £3.4m). Tim riley (talk) 16:47, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
