Importance rating[edit]

I suggest this be "high" as it is a major pest species—GRM 19:56, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Common names[edit]

I have removed the common names "American bollworm" as this species is not found in the Americas. See the distribution map [here]. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 13:06, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In India the species is indeed known as the "American bollworm" (eg. www.cicr.org.in/PDF/kycp_bw.pdf‎). I agree that this common name is misleading.

I don't like how the first sentence starts with a long list of names. Perhaps this would improve the readability:

"Helicoverpa armigera is a moth, the larvae of which feed on a wide range of plants, including many important cultivated crops. Common names of Helicoverpa armigera include the cotton bollworm, corn earworm, Old World (African) bollworm and the scarce bordered straw."

Alternatively, if the common name "American bollworm" is ance again included.

"Helicoverpa armigera is a moth, the larvae of which feed on a wide range of plants, including many important cultivated crops. Common names of Helicoverpa armigera include the cotton bollworm, corn earworm, Old World (African) bollworm and the scarce bordered straw. In India this species is sometimes described as the "American bollworm." However Helicoverpa armigera is not found in the America, which are populated by a closely related "sibling species" Helicoverpa zea (ref)."
