@User:PRehse Thank you for your edits, I was struggling on the honorifics, trying to keep them straight, having the MOS prevail is the right decision and makes the article easier to read.

Fighting what has been termed one of the bloodiest battles fought in modern warfare may have some relevance as to why Long took up karate, I thought that the Marine KIAs and the quote from the memorial inferred that Chosin is more historically significant than most modern battles. (With weapons malfunctioning in the cold (the firing pin lubrication frozen) a good proportion of the killing was likely hand to hand.)

Concerning, Primary sources, I have a lot of reprints of the biography that was apparently originally authored by Long's student Phil Little. At first, I thought that these were all identical copy-paste, but in most cases I found nuances within various publications, sometimes with organization specific facts inserted, slightly different accounting of events and even just a unique title, "Harold G. Long (Inducted in 1981)" gave me at least an authoritative cite to one of the inductions.

Long's biography is published in two formal books, one is copy paste of Little's eulogy, the other is in prose. Coupled with his awards and the books he authored, I think notability is firmly established. What can we do about your Template:Primary tag? Would it help if I used the quote parameter in the citation templates to denote the nuances in the record? Thanks again! -- 009o9 (talk) 13:57, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

Tags are informative not sanctions. I would leave it be and hopefully others will contribute - its a fact that notability in wikipedia is defined by reliable third party sources and his students are not that. Neither are Hall of Fame mentions or High Rank. The article could do with a few more good references - perhaps Black Belt Magazine articles. I removed the Chosen lines since they did not really fit. Chosen was certainly a defining battle for the Marines and anyone who fought there but you already have a link and the statement just did not contribute directly to Long's story. @User:PRehse Yes, the I see what you are saying. The memorial inscription supports the statement, "The marines who survived this battle became known as the 'Chosen Few'. Today, this group is referred to as the 'Eternal Band of Brothers.'" from Long's biography. So far, I don't have a direct source for Long speaking about the battle (or connecting it to martial arts), but as with most veterans, I doubt that there is one. Long's military records are not old enough for me to access, so I could not determine his ending rank or if he was decorated.

In the two books that do contain Long's bio, neither are attributed to student Little, the copied source may be RS but probably not independent.

I'll see if I can do a direct search of the archives for Black Belt magazine, thanks. Google also has a way of finding content once I've searched my subjects extensively, sometimes that takes a couple of week though. I understand what you are saying about the tags not being sanctions, I generally try to use inline or section tags, but for WP:Primary they would not be appropriate.
