What does this mean?[edit]

"The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 caused the celebration to be shut down." Seems to be in complete contradiction to "2006, the last year of the large organized street party." So when was the last year? 2019 or 2006? 76.126.58.108 (talk) 22:40, 30 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

some cleanup would be good[edit]

This article has a lot of information that's not directly related to Halloween in the Castro. Nearly all of the History section would be more appropriate in articles about SF gay history and/or articles about the Tenderloin and Castro. I strongly concur. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:29, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Actually a good article would explain how this information ties together, it may have been structured poorly but no massive event like this exists in a vacuum and the event has always been tied to the LGBT communities so including some of that development in relation would certainly make sense. -- Banjeboi 20:49, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
p.s. The current "citation needed tags" seem to have been done not for actual content concerns but as a general disapproval of the article subject. Feel free to take with a grain of salt. -- Banjeboi 20:54, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

article rewrite note[edit]

I need to take a break, I've added the context and now it needs more details on what made the event special or notable and notable incidents and dates. -- Banjeboi 22:39, 20 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image copyright problem with File:Sarr1.jpg[edit]

The image File:Sarr1.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

Rewrite proposed[edit]

I suggest a re-write with a chronological structure.

If Children's Halloween and involvement of The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are difficult to work in chronologically, perhaps they could get special sections.

I think the Jose Sarria section should be removed (perhaps the existing article about her could be consulted to see if any information presently in this article should be added to her main article). It looks like her involvement was mostly in the 60s, when Halloween was in the Tenderloin. Perhaps another article could be created for Halloween in the Tenderloin.

This article is about how Hallowwen in the Polk (Tenderloin) morphed into Halloween in The Castro and exactly dovetails the rise as first the Polk and then the Castro as the gay neighborhood. Sarria was instrumental in developing the gay community when it was centered in the Polk, The Sisters' came in only, IMHO, in the mid-1980s although they were around before then - but they pretty much were the face of the event for the best known years (the most recent, of course) from the early 1990s to 1995 or so, whenever they pulled out. We could break down a bit to represent the history of the event. This could help in showing how the other material could fit in better. But the LGBT components are integral to the event so removing that seems like a really bad idea. -- Banjeboi 20:51, 30 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The title of the article is Halloween in the Castro. An article about Halloween in the Tenderloin would an appropriate place for information about that subject. Andy54321 04:50, 31 October 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Andy54321 (talkcontribs)

Actually this article is about both. There is no reason to split this article in two as we have quite easily covered the salient issues about both here. Halloween in the Polk (Tenderloin) became Halloween In the Castro, it's the same event. As such we explain that in the lede. Eventually there may be so much here that two articles would be better but it seems unneeded as of yet. -- Banjeboi 00:36, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is not a quality article. It's a tangential mess. It needs to be reorganized and rewritten. I wanted to improve the article but I do not want to argue about stuff that makes no sense (even after others have agreed with me). I'm new to editing and I feel bullied and intimidated. This has totally turned me off. I give up. Yay for Wikipedia! Andy54321 09:25, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

This is interesting as I feel your edits are degrading the article rather than improving it. Meanwhile you have accused me of bullying you and otherwise disrupting but I have no idea what you're talking about. I have certainly disagreed with you and still do but there is no reason to post {{calm talk}} on this page as no one seems to be engaging in heated exchanges. As is is now the lede is misleading and presents this major event as stating in the 1940s in the Castro, and suddenly becoming massive decades later. That's simply false. The children's Halloween was started that long ago but the street event for adults started in the Polk and the event later migrated to the Castro when the gays moved there in the 1970s. It's one major event that started in one neighborhood and then moved to the other with the gay communities. The children's Halloween, meanwhile, has always been a separate event and has continued to this day. We should not misrepresent these facts. -- Banjeboi 20:32, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
