First Lieutenant : HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh[edit]

Red Sea tour of duty - "At Home" - 1950[edit]

There was a 'show the flag' tour of duty out of R61’s Malta base in the Med. in early 1950 to the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, among other destinations south of the Suez Canal. The Commander in Chief, Mediterranean, and the Captains and Officers of H.M Ships Chequers, Surprise, Cheviot, Chieftan, Chevron, and of H.M. S/M Tabard, were "at home" to the Port Sudan Commissioner and to selected guests, who were residents of Port Sudan on the Red Sea. The reception was held aboard H.M.S. Chequers from 6.15 p.m. on Saturday 14th January, 1950. (Source: personal R.S.V.P. invitation to civilian invitees.) Later that night, at the Red Sea Club, Port Sudan, from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., a Ball was held with 20 various dances programmed, with an interval after the first ten brackets, and concluding with "God Save the King".
