How sure are we that Gumby describes a type of character, and not just the name of these characters? I always presumed that collectively they were the Gumbys (in same way that a bunch of people all called Kelly would be the Kellys). Dupont Circle 19:40, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Steve Jones[edit]

Is this where Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols took the handerchief he wore on his head from?

No, the hankie-on-head used to be a common practice for British men on holiday, The Pythons (being satirists) adopted it for their Gumbies. Why Steve Jones was wearing such a naff item I don't know. Perhaps to annoy Malcolm and Vivienne? Totnesmartin 08:05, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Brummies[edit]

My understanding was that 'gumby's' were taking the mickey out of people from Birmingham? (also known as 'Brummies' ) who have that sort of booming accent? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dupont Circle (talk • contribs).

My impression is that they were taking the P*** out of Yorkshiremen, though this may simply be part of the love-hate relationship between Lancastrians and Yorkies (a sort of We'd like Yorkshire if the Yorkshiremen were not there type thing) as I'm a Lancashire lad, the Gumbies voices are a bit Yorkshireman-ish though the Brummie theory is interesting-GeorgeFormby1
