2007[edit]

A tag has been placed on GRASP (multimedia authoring software), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article seems to be blatant advertising which only promotes a company, product, group or service and which would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the general criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 11, as well as the guidelines on spam.

If you can indicate why the subject of this article is not blatant advertising, you may contest the tagging. To do this, please add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. hangon[edit]

GRASP is historically most famous for being used to produce the first pornographic animated scripts and graphics in its .GL format. It was widely used by professionals for all types of 2D presentation and animated graphics on the PC platform in the pre-Windows era. Lyricanjl 05:41, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • If GRASP is so famous as you say, it must be easy to find reliable sources about it. I put {{db-spam}} because of the "need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic" part of CSD#G11... something like {{WikiProject Biography}} but about a (now discontinued) product. If anyone else oppose speedy, I would suggest {{prod}} or {{afd}}. Note that there are references, but they are unused in the article, and it is not clear how the references endorse the actual content. Thanks. I cleaned-up the references. I am so sorry that nobody in this Wiki remembers the first Paint program for the PC or those GRASP GL demos that were so amazing back in the '80's.

I am getting through all this that the editors of Wikipedia think that I am advertsing something. I hate to say-it but it just seems that if Microsoft didn't do-it or IBM didn't do-it, etc. there wasn't any point in recording the history of it because it didn't sell books.

So should Wikipedia be deprived of this info and only get the info that the BIG COMPANIES paid to have published? What is it that I am advertising?

I could point to lots of small computer companies that did really amazing things that are all gone now, vanished without a single book being written about them, or without a single academic writing a paper about them. That doesn't mean that Wikipedia should be deprived of this information.

GRASP isn't like that nor is PCPaint. This stuff was mainstream, but lots of it was proprietary, and done behind closed doors... quietly, but references, though hard to come by still exist for the stuff that was technical... and the people are still alive who remember. Why challenge it?

Maybe we need a process that provides that first person recollections can be verified by a written and notarized mailed-in document to Wikipedia.

I have tons of articles that I have written about those days. But I don't have the time to post them here until I get your trust. And I am not taking this personally. This is an observation.

I really do understand the need for citing etc. But there is nothing here to sell. Bridges and others like him are private people who work from project to project. I do the same. We don't have the infamy of a Bill Gates nor the desire to promote, nor the money either.

Our accomplishments do deserve recognition and should be easily referenceable unless you want to lose all history except the history that BIG BUCKS pays to get written. In which case Wikipedia's behind is covered with the paper that the SELF-PROMOTORS paid for and the rest of us vanish into the past. Isn't this the exact opposite of what we all want?

I should add that I have abslutely no affiliation with PCPaint, or GRASP and I do this as a hobby. There is no money in promoting dead products, but there is satisfaction in recording the history of computing before everyone forgets.

Wikipedia does not endorse any "big company". Good stuff may be written without supporting bucks. It could have even been mentioned in a tiny footnote on a book, or in a paragraph from an academic paper. Of course having a book entitled "GRASP guide for graphics animation professionals" (or a paper exclusively dedicated to it) may help for providing sources, but it is not an absolute requirement. Also, using references in the main text would not harm (they are provided at the end, but I can not see how they endorse the actual content). Rjgodoy 00:12, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Blacklisted Links Found on the Main Page[edit]

Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request it's removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.
