Decomposing Article into individual articles per GCT[edit]

Hello Everyone. Great contributions to the page so far.

As the GCT enters its 4th year, I believe it has come time to make a change to the GCT article as a whole. The problem with the current structure, is that the page has grown too long and is filled with many results tables and participant tables. As chess players and enthusiasts, these tables are familiar tools to explain tournament results, but they lack explanatory text and are difficult to decipher for a layman. The large size and number of tables also makes distinguishing between each year and each tournament more difficult. In addition, a good deal of important GCT information is being lost. There is currently no wikipedia article for the GCT Rapid and Blitz 2016: Paris and Leuven, or 2017: Paris, Leuven and St. Louis. Putting the results of those events in the main GCT article would add too much clutter, but I argue that they are justifiably important events.

Here is what I propose. We decompose the main GCT article into sub articles for each GCT year. The main GCT article will provide context, history and links to each GCT sub article. For an example of the how it can be done, we can look at the FIDE Grand Prix article. The Fide Grand Prix (FGP) has a similar format to GCT, in that it is an annual aggregate of several tournaments with an additional prize for the overall winners of the FGP. The main FGP article has links to each year's FGP. If we take a look at the FIDE Grand Prix 2017 sub-article, we can see how each tournament in the 2017 FGP's cross-table is represented, as well as the overall ranking of the players in the 2017 FGP itself.

I suggest we do the same thing with the GCT. For example, we take the GCT 2017 section and convert it into its own article named "Grand Chess Tour 2017." We add a header section describing its relation and significance to the main GCT article. We expand the history a bit, add the format rules and prize funds, and include detailed cross-tables from each tournament, as well as maintaining the overall player standings for the GCT 2017. For Paris, Leuven and St. Louis R&B we will need to add new crosstables entirely. For Sinquefield and London, these cross-tables might be redundant with the main articles for the tournaments respectively. However, I would argue that the inclusion on the GCT 2017 page is worthwhile for consolidation of results.

This may be a challenge to decompose the article and maintain the style and references throughout each GCT sub-article, but I think it is better that we make this change now with only three years of GCT to move before it gets worse. On this talk page I will start to break down each GCT year into a new sub article. Please let me know what your thoughts are on this decomposition idea, or if you would like to help. Since traffic to this page is likely high around the end of London Chess Classic. I suggest we wait until 20:00 UTC Jan 10th, 2017 to make the proposed changes.
