Height data in the infobox[edit]

Graham Burke's height in the infobox is:

  • inconsistent with the source (Yahoo Sports).
  • Inconsistent with Premier League.
  • Inconsistent with Irish usage. (Burke is Irish.)

I propose changing the citation to Premier League and making the information metric first. Are there any comments or concerns? Michael Glass (talk) 23:55, 3 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Your proposed change is not necessary because Graham Burke's height in the infobox is:
  • Now consistent with the Yahoo source and with the AVFC source I added to support it.
  • The Premier League are not a special Wikipedia partner so we don't need to follow their habits anymore than we follow the official AVFC website, the official PFA Footballers' Who's Who or any one of the other reliable sources for player heights.
  • The Irish still use feet and inches as much as we do.
We need to discuss which measure to use properly somewhere and get a proper agreement to stop all this time wasting and arguing and changing all the time. Can you help me find where or how we can do that please? Speccy4Eyes (talk) 21:58, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Iriah usage is split between Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK and follows UK usage, and the Irish Republic, which is an independent country that uses the metric system. Graham Burke, who was born in Dublin, comes from the Irish Republic and has played on the national team for Ireland.

The data for the Irish International team for Association Football is consistently metric only. http://www.fai.ie/ireland/senior-men/squad?title=&field_seasons_tid%5B%5D=4097 (Follow the links to all the players and you can confirm this.)

Because this player comes from the Irish Republic, the present text is still inconsistent with usage in the Irish Republic, with Premier League and with Yahoo Sports. Michael Glass (talk) 10:02, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Inconsistent citations[edit]

Does a citation for height need to be more authorative than a citation for date of birth? One editor removed 2 citations for height and replaced them with 1 which they said was more authorative, buth left the old 2 as citations for date of birth. This doesn't add up really.

And what makes the new citation more authorative anyway? Is there a list showing the pecking order or is it just personal opinion? Speccy4Eyes (talk) 07:19, 9 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Premier League is a more authoritative source than Yahoo Sports because it is the official body. It should therefore be used in preference to Yahoo Sports. In any case, the date of birth in both sources is identical. Michael Glass (talk) 09:49, 9 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The height in both sources was identical too. I've fixed your change to eliminate Yahoo and left just the 2 official and authorative sources (AVFC and PL) in place. The AVFC one is there because some editors think WP:UNITS doesn't apply to them and insist on using only the same units as the source. This way we can keep them happy too. Speccy4Eyes (talk) 19:30, 9 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I have no objection to two citations though others consider that this is overkill for such a small point. Graham Burke is from the Irish Republic, which, unlike Northern Ireland, uses the metric system more consistently than the UK, and that justifies putting the metric measures first. (The same point applies to other players from the Irish Republic and other countries that use the metric system.) Michael Glass (talk) 00:10, 10 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
