Origin of the name Govan, naming of Govan Mbeki building in Glasgow[edit]

Here's the text of the 2001 Financial Times article:

The Gov'nor
Thabo Mbeki's state visit to Britain is not all about bouquets and banquets.
There was a nice family touch yesterday when the South African president opened a health faculty at Glasgow Caledonian University - to be named the Govan Mbeki health building after his father.
Mbeki Snr, Mandela's prison companion on Robben Island for many years, was not called Govan out of any loyalty to the shipyard on the Clyde. He was named in honour of Edward Govan, the Scottish missionary who founded the non-racial school he attended in the eastern Cape - Lovedale College.
Both Govan Mbeki and Mandela attended the school, as did Thabo, before he fled into exile.
When Mandela visited Glasgow Caledonian in 1996, he turned down the offer to have the new building named after him. Too many public places already bore his name, he said. So why not call it after one of his closest friends - Govan Mbeki?

Death[edit]

We somehow seem to jump from serving in the Senate to exhuming his remains. Didn't he die in between? Skinsmoke (talk) 00:53, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Doctorate[edit]

I'm pretty sure it was Thabo Mbeki attending the ceremony at University of Amsterdam, and accepting the doctorate on behalf of his father. I was there. X10 (talk) 21:45, 15 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I uploaded the first photograph to Commons. Originally I had the same opinion (the son being Thabo Mbeki) -and added a similar category, but I changed my mind after another user made a smart remark. Besides: several newspapers at the time clearly identified Moeletsi as the son accepting the doctorate on behalf of his father. Vysotsky (talk) 21:05, 15 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Right. I have been wrong for all those years.... X10 (talk) 21:44, 15 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I met Moeletsi once. I could send him an email, just to ask him for sure. Vysotsky (talk) 22:56, 15 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
