Change of genus from Brachypteryx to Heteroxenicus[edit]

I changed the genus of Gould's shortwing from Brachypteryx to Heteroxenicus and cited IOC 6.2. My edit was reverted with the comment: "most still with old genus". I was surprised at being reverted as I didn't think my edit was contentious. I dislike placing species in monotypic genera but the authorities that I rely on have all adopted Heteroxenicus:

IOC 6.2 http://www.worldbirdnames.org/bow/chats/ has Heteroxenicus stellatus with the note: "Separate Gould's Shortwing from Brachypteryx to Heteroxenicus (Rasmussen & Anderton 2005, Collar 2005); note gender agreement."

HBW alive http://www.hbw.com/species/goulds-shortwing-heteroxenicus-stellatus has Heteroxenicus stellatus with the note: "...herein considered sufficiently distinctive in plumage and vocalizations to warrant reinstatement in its own monotypic genus."

Dickinson, Remsen & Christidis (2014) The Howard & Moore Complete Checklist of the Birds of the World. 4th. Edition has Heteroxenicus stellatus (information from "Comparison of IOC 6.2 with other world lists" http://www.worldbirdnames.org/IOC_6.2_vs_other_lists.xlsx )

With 10,000 bird species to review I assume most web sites tend to follow the above authorities after some delay in updating their lists: Zoomonen has Heteroxenicus stellatus: http://www.zoonomen.net/avtax/pa4l.html as does the ITIS. EOL, GBIF and IUCN have Brachypteryx - but the IUCN entry was last updated in 2012. In view of the above I have again changed the genus to Heteroxenicus. I'd leave it in Brachypteryx unless you want to change all the country lists.......Also ebird leaves it in Brachypteryx.......Enough doubt to leave as is.....see the taxonbar......Pvmoutside (talk) 17:17, 23 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
