2001 Goodall Cup Winner incorrect[edit]

I believe the 2001 Goodall Cup winner to be incorrect. The Adelaide Avalanche won the AIHL championship in 2001, when they defeated the Sydney Bears in Adelaide in a single final game (there were only 3 teams in the AIHL before 2002). Soon after in September, the Goodall Cup tournament was held seperately at the newly opened Hunter Ice Skating Stadium in Warners Bay, NSW.

The host team, the North Stars, were Senior B NSW champions for the year, and were granted permission to compete. Also attending was the Sydney Bears, the NSW Brown Tournament team, Victoria and Queensland. I don't remember ACT or WA making the event, and neither the Avalanche or a SA side were present.

The Sydney Bears won that tournament and the Goodall Cup. I worked as a volunteer timekeeper and penalty-box attendant during that tournament.

I believe the President of the IHA has made the same mistake. I've heard he's put the 2001 winners down on the Goodall Cup as the Avalanche, but I forgot to check this for myself when the Cup was in Newcastle for the World Championships. Our photographer captured every name plate on the newly-mounted Cup, so I'll wait for the photos to bring this to light.

Erroneous information about early years[edit]

The history on the IHA website is an article that conflicts with others I have read, especially so with Syd Tange's NSW Ice Hockey History and Facts. For example, in Syd Tange's book both NSW and Vic had exhibition games in 1907 in their respective Glaciariums, including an arbitrary "NSW vs Vic" game in Sydney. In 1908 the state bodies and clubs were formed, and in 1909 the two states met for the first time officially to play for the then new trophy, the Goodall Cup.
