Historical Problems

I have heard that the real team played Utah in the final four, but this was changed from the film, since there were black players on the Utah team. I am no expert on the subject, so I am not editing this page - however, I think that it is something that should be included. 216.117.224.110

The street Glory Road was renamed to reflect the film/book. It was originally Baltimore and was changed in 2005.

More on historical problems

While I haven't seen the film, I've read enough reviews about it and know enough of the history to know there are major historical problems with it, besides the East Texas State canard.

• Texas Western indeed played Utah in the national semifinals. Not only did Utah have black players, but one of them, Jerry Chambers, was the Most Outstanding Player of that tournament.
• As the pairings turned out, Texas Western was assured of playing an all-white team in the final. Kentucky's semifinal victim, Duke, was also all-white.
• Haskins wasn't a new coach in 1965; the championship season was actually his fifth at Texas Western. His first team in 1961-62 had three black players, including senior Nolan Richardson. The school had integrated its athletic program in 1955. (As Steve Sailer pointed out in his review of the film, El Paso "is so far from Fort Sumter that it's west of Denver".)
• Haskins didn't choose to play five blacks in the final to make a political statement—his regular starting lineup that season consisted of five African Americans.
• The movie's portrayal of Kentucky fans waving Confederate flags is a major exaggeration. Pictures of the game show a few Kentucky fans doing so in the upper bleachers, but Confederate imagery was never used by more than a small minority of Kentucky fans—unlike some other SEC schools, most notably Ole Miss. I went to UK in the early 1980s, and never saw a Confederate flag at any sporting event.—Dale Arnett 03:09, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
