I can't log in here, but I can assure everyone through personal experience that the SS South American was not made out of wood. She was made of plain old ship's steel, about 3/16" plates and riveted frames. I worked on the ship in 1966, along with a lot of other Cleveland college kids.

There seems to be an error here, perhaps propagated by the Michigan History article. I grew up in Holland, MI and when we moved there in 1961 I remember seeing all three ships - the North American, the South American and the Alabama moored there over the winter. I would say statements that the Alabama was converted to a barge in 1946 would be false. KevinInMfrg (talk) 00:15, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
