Harvard obituary[edit]

The Harvard obituary claims he was a Physics undergraduate. I believe Mackey on several occasions told me he had majored in Chemistry at Rice.--CSTAR 00:55, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps he started out in Chemistry and moved to physics. In any case we should get this cleared up.--CSTAR 02:58, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding, based on letters he wrote about his life, is that he started at Rice as a chemical engineering major -- what he described as a compromise between his own interest in pure chemistry and his father's wish for him to pursue a business career. In his sophomore year, he switched to the Physics program, and ultimately received his undergraduate degree in Physics. --asm 03:23, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that makes sense. In any case, it also shows that relying on one's recollections is a disaster.--CSTAR 03:29, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
