Where did the gold of the ancient Egyptians come from?[edit]

In the bronze age Egypt was famous as a rich source of gold, there is a famous letter in the 14th century BCE where the king of Balylonia is asking the Phareo for gold for his temples, because gold is as common as sand in Egypt. Though he was clearly exagarating for sake of argument, it does show that in the world at that time Egypt was a major source of gold (silver being less common, as is also shown in grave gifts). I did hope to find something in this article on where (and in what geological setting) this gold was mined (somewhere in the western desert I seem to recall), anyone has any specific knowledge on that?
