Should the loco list be a seperate article?[edit]

I'm not sure if a complete listing of the locomotives belongs here (I know, I am one of the guilty parties if it doesn't). Would we be better off setting the loco list up as a separate article, such as List of GMD Locomotives? Wuhwuzdat (talk) 00:38, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Article confusion[edit]

There seems to be some confusion in this article as to what GMDD was. In reality GMDD was the Canadian operations of GM, building Transit buses, military vehicles, and railway locomotives at two facilities in Canada. These were in London, Ontario (the first facility) and St.Eustache, Quebec. The US operation were known as GMC for buses, and EMD for railway locomotives. This article needs to be sorted out. I commented out all the EMD models that were not built at London. There aren't enough differences between (for example) an EMD GP38 and a GMD GP38 to warrant two articles, so where a model was built in the US, the link will start "EMD". If the list of locomotives gets moved to its own article, (and maybe the list of buses to its own as well), then what's left could be merged into General Motors Diesel.
GMD is not the same as GMDD. GMD was the subsidiary that ran the London operation. GMDD was an umbrella structure that existed from 1938 to 1965 for management of GM's Cleveland Diesel Engine Division and Detroit Diesel Engine Division. After Cleveland Diesel was terminated in 1962, the structure became redundant and its function was taken over by Detroit Diesel.

Contradictions[edit]

Dates contradict between the two articles General Motors Diesel and General Motors Diesel Division, as do facts. GMD doesn't mention anything but locomotives and doesn't mention GMDD except GMDD of Canada.

Break up and send to GMC and List of GM-EMD locomotives?[edit]

London is real, but it's there for paper, building GM products on the other side of a line. This has been covered in other GM articles. The article references are weak, too. Is this article necessary? The bus table would really punch up GMC and List of GMD Locomotives would fit into List of GM-EMD locomotives. On both of these tables/lists you could list the models together, with a column for where they were built. You could also split one model, such as "Model=GP-9" "Built=3436 McCook 646 London". Yes!!! GMDD produced no vehicles of any kind and listing vehicles built by GMC, EMD, and GMD as produced by GMDD is highly misleading. The first statement of the article is true. The rest is false by its association with GMDD, which was essentially a marketing and customer service structure for the Cleveland and Detroit Diesel Engine divisions from 1938 to 1965. Take away the false statements and there is no article left. The useful information can be put in articles on GMC, GMD, Detroit Diesel, and Cleveland Diesel. Well, the article is short and sweet now, without the glaring GMD/GMDD error and mis-attribution of vehicle production to GMDD.
