Avoid redundancies[edit]

I know I'm only new here, but I would prefer that if edits be made to this article - and by extension, any article - read it thoroughly first to avoid redundancies! (This is coming from someone who's worked as a copy editor on a website, BTW) Fastbak77 04:28, August 16, 2005 (UTC)

Controversy[edit]

Does the whole "Superman helping Africans" 'controversy' really need to be dealt with so largely? It wasnt that big a deal. Only a couple of fans didnt like it, and they didnt even criticize it properly (Superman protecting the Africans from "Whitey" was mentioned by the critic, even though there were no other white characters in the scene). If it needs to be mentioned, fine, but dont make it a bigger deal than it was. --DrBat 14:06, August 16, 2005 (UTC)

It's only one paragraph, and it was reported elsewhere (as per the external link). It's included as I feel it'd be of interest to the potential reader. And why the neutrality dispute? I don't know Simone personally; I'm just relating the facts of the matter. That said, the references to Austen and Byrne will be modified as per NPOV. Fastbak77 23:43, August 16, 2005 (UTC)
To me, it makes it look like its trying to paint Gail Simone as a racist. Second, there was hardly any controversy over it. Gail Simone's run has been critically acclaimed; only one or two people complained about that one scene, and they couldnt even get their facts straight in their argument. --DrBat 17:44, August 18, 2005 (UTC)
I think it paints Simone as anything *but* a racist. And the fact that the 'critics' jumped the gun somewhat was actually the point of the matter. Fastbak77 04:50, September 10, 2005 (UTC)
I hadn't really seen this anyway except here. It's a minor detail. And I'd know, because I am a venerated author of Gilligan's Island fan fiction. --Chris Griswold 10:35, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Citation request[edit]

"Some controversies ensued due to the inker, Nelson, redesigning some of the panels and or faces of characters in Byrne's pencils. Although it was supposed to be a 12 issue run, it was cut short, due to Byrne's numerous disparaging remarks about Gail's weight."

I've removed that passage from the article until we dig up a citation for this information. Gamaliel 20:49, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know about the latter, but you can go to byrne robotics forums as well as comicbloc.com's forums to find proof of the panel re-designs from byrne's pencils to nelsons inks. I dont really have a link (my orginal link on comic bloc forums changed when it went from geoffjohns.com to comic bloc and addresses were altered) however I do have pictures proving the image changes. It was also on a few major comic news sites.
I'd also take note though, Byrne has gotten a reputation for saying rather...spiteful or cruel comments about people (best example is his infamous 'any latino who bleaches her hair looks like a whore' comment in refrence to jessica alba that went all over the net and back) so that could make the alleged line more likely truthful...or more likely some angry fan's rumor that would be easily supported. Midusunknown 11:43, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Is that really important to Gail's entry? It's more to do with Byrne's. Why is Gail the only comics writer I think to call by her first name, despit not knowing her? I, as an esteemed actor in public theater find that interesting. --Chris Griswold 10:35, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The comment above is total horsepoo. John never said anything like that to me, and in fact we got along very well. Someone's just a flat-out liar. Gail
I'm gonna try and email gail simone and make sure that was actually her posting that, to which if she confirms or atleast can shed light then we can put the whole thing up to being officially disproven.Midusunknown 11:21, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I talked to gail on Comic Bloc Forums, where she confirmed this was her and just a bad rumour. Furthermore she says that her and john, in fact left the book together as a new creative team was coming in (which makes perfect sense considering all the superman books were getting pressed for time as the OYL event neared and they did the crossover for earth-1 superman). So simply put, the rumour is false, it has been disproven. In my opinion, we should go even further in disproving this by erasing this section of the discussion page in a week or so (giving time for people who were still looking at this to see it was disproven). any oppose such an action? Women in Refrigerators[edit]

Hi. I am somewhat surprised that Women in Refrigerators only gets a one sentence mention at the very end of the article. It is a big part of her fame, is it not? Also, there are no dates in article. How long has she been a comic creator, etc? Just stuff I was wondering about. Savatar 03:27, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I was wondering the same too. From the way it sounds is that she became a comic writer after she made that web site in 1999. Is there any way to confirm that as the thing that caused her to make the leap from relatively unknown writer and comic fan to actual comic writer like other notable figures Kevin Smith (he pretty much launched his director and comic writing career from Clerks) and Sam Hamm (invited to write Batman comics after DC liked his script for the Batman movie). Abrynkus 21:51, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Trivia section is gone[edit]

I have eliminated the trivia section, incorporating the important into the article and eliminating the unnecessary. I would, however, like to find a home for this information: "Until recently, Simone owned a hairdressing salon."' I think that's important; very many comics professionals work day jobs. But it needs more information, and it needs to be cited. --Chris Griswold 11:37, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gail Simone's Violence Against Female Characters[edit]

The article uses her Women in Refrigerators site as part of her past. It is therefore relevant that after getting into mainstream comics, she made use of the actions and behaviors that she had decried on the site. If you like, I can add references for the issue numbers in which particular examples of this occurred, but covering up the fact that she has done so, while still including her WiR site as bringing her to fan attention, is far greater POV than including it. -RannXXV 16:31, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please do cite your sources, but Gail's stance against violence has more to do with the violence being used as a plot point for a male character or as an attack on womanhood. When Kyle's girlfriend is murdered, it's not about her; it's about Kyle. Same with Sue Dibny's rape. Identity Crisis is largely about how the male characters are affected. Birds of Prey treats the female characters with respect. They get injured, sure, because it's a superhero comic. But they're not being raped or having violent miscarriages or being made infertile by other characters. The attack is not against the gender. --Chris Griswold 20:19, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If you look at the actual WIR list, it's just a list of examples of supposedly mistreated female characters. It is certainly not limited to cases where the violence is a plot point for a male character or an attack on womanhood. In fact for some of the entries in the list a male character died at the same time in the same way as part of the same event, and yet the female character makes it into the list. Ken Arromdee 15:20, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not having violent miscarriages? What do you call her having Cheshire get shot through the stomach while she was pregnant? ... And what the HELL does "attack against the gender" mean?!?!!? ... Oh, wait. You're one of those that actually buys into the whole "conspiracy of misogyny" thing. Ugh. You know, I have my criticisms of Gail Simone's writing, but I usually enjoy it. I just wish she weren't dedicated to being such a hypocrite, liar, and misogynist, and that some of her fans didn't join her in it. Whatever, I should have learned looong ago that actual facts and Wikipedia have a restraining order. -RannXXV 21:41, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You may find Wikipedia:Neutral point of view and Wikipedia:Civility helpful. --Chris Griswold 22:13, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Dude, please don't keep posting about this. You haven't gotten a bit of it right, not a bit. Read the damn wir website before you pretend to know what you're talking about.
And Cheshire was not shot in the stomach, nor did she die or lose the baby. For god's sake, you sound like a lunatic here.
Gail

Bibliography[edit]

I'm putting a bibliography together, but I can't seem to find information on the following projects that were mentioned in interviews:

  • Justice League of America (Did this become JLA:Classified?)
  • Night Nurse
  • Chun Li from Udon Studios

Any help? Thanks.

DOB[edit]

Afaik, Gail is born on July 29 [1], can someone help out on the year and location? It is a bit embarrassing that an author this high-profile lacks this info. Onomatopoeia 14:08, 17 October 2006 (UTC) Was she really born in 1974? - ManicPanic —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.229.156.77 (talk) 20:53, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

pseudonym[edit]

What's this pseudonym business? --Chris Griswold () 15:09, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry that was me being lazy - it's a bit of an open secret in the community - I meant to stick it in ages ago but was reminded of it again when Rich Johnson (lying in the gutter) mentioned it somewhere. I'll find a decent source in the morning. --Charlesknight 23:12, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

first female Wonder Woman writer claim[edit]

Just putting this here in case someone is tempted to reinstate it: while the New York Times did claim that Gail is the first ongoing female Wonder Woman writer, that claim is disputed by those knowledgable on the history of Wonder Woman... including Gail herself: http://comicsworthreading.com/2007/11/27/gail-simone-in-ny-times/ entry 13. --Nat Gertler (talk) 23:04, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Criticism[edit]

I removed the "criticism" bit because I don't think James Freeman has ever read the site. WiR isn't saying "women should never get hurt EVA", it's saying, "hey, instead of raping/killing off/depowering the sole female on your team in order to cause her boyfriend pain, why don't you, y'know, not?" . Year of Birth[edit]

What is the source of Gail being born in 1974? That seems much too young, given the timeframe of her career, the fact that she has a teenage son, and that she has spoken extensively about growing up reading comics during the 1970s. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.61.157.136 (talk) 18:30, 19 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Since no one has provided a source, I am removing Simone's year of birth from this article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.61.157.136 (talk) 20:20, 31 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
