9351/93XX[edit]

9351 is *not* a 43 or any other variety of the class. On the actual 43s http://www.greatwestern.org.uk/m_in_260.htm is pretty good on the detail Its a bit confusing, but basically 43xx is the original Churchward design, 63xx on had various small changes, and there were also renumberings concerned with adding or removing weight from the front bufferbeam which affected wear on tyres. All 4300 had Standard 4 boilers. 9300 - 9319 were indeed the Collett side window cab variant, but, and its a great big but, 9351 is not a 4300 relative at all, but is, as mentioned on the West Somerset Railway page on Wikipedia, a conversion of a 5101 class 2-6-2 Tank (5193), and as such has the appreciably smaller standard 2 boiler. The 5101 and the 4300 had many standard parts in common with each other (and with other classes) hence the superficial similarity. See also WSR Rolling stock.
