Following a revert dispute, I suggest we now discuss the issues here [written before previous comment].

This article, currently named Fitch, is a disambiguation page. It has a redirect to it from Fitch (surname). It appears that there has been previous discussion about merging two articles (see above), but it is not apparent from the discussion what was being merged or why, nor even what this article was called at the time (the identical discussion occurs at Talk:Fitch (surname)).

The article as it stands includes encyclopaedic information about the name Fitch, including a template and external links. Essentially it is trying to be both a dab and a stub article. MOS:DAB makes it clear that a dab is a way of deciding which similarly named article to choose, and should therefore contain only enough information to distinguish between them. It is not a place for encyclopaedic information.

I propose moving the surname information into Fitch (surname), where it can be a stub encyclopaedic article. That would leave Fitch as a pure disambiguation page. Essentially I can see no reason for an article with both dab and encyclopaedic information. I am not suggesting moving people named Fitch to the Fitch (surname) article, as distinguishing between them is also a disambiguation task (was that perhaps the previous proposal?).

I would be interested to hear contrary arguments, but it seems to me that it will take jolly good ones to justify going against MOS:DAB.
