Collaboration[edit]

Starting Out[edit]

Okay, to start out, we should probably get rid of the extensive quotes in the article and cite a few more POV statements too. To start this off, I'm going to get rid of one-half the GA statements and consolidate the Joseph F Smith statement into a more concise statement. Pahoran513 22:34, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that they dominate the article right now, but my intention was to implement them as sources into the article as we expand it. Really, I don't think there should be a section of "statements" at all by the time it's finished. So, what do you think about putting them back in and then removing them as the details are added to the body? uriah923(talk) 06:16, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I looked them over before I deleted them and they simply seemed to repeat themselves over and over again. Most of them had only passing references to FHE (mostly just using it as an example of how to strengthen family). I object to putting them blankly back in, but working them in quotes is fine by me. I agree with doing that for the whole article. Pahoran513 02:34, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It seems to me that one of the shortcomings of this article is that someone who doesn't know what a family home evening is wouldn't be able to understand it at all by reading this article as it stands. It really needs to be more fleshed out. I would propose using the quotes and letters as a basis, and then add on them to give an understanding of FHE. For example, the 1915 letter is important in that it established the practice of family home evening as well as what and why the Church encouraged their members to hold it. I don't think it would be POV to explain this, since this is a program of the LDS church. Sentences such as "The LDS church teaches that. . ." or "President Smith encouraged. . ." might be appropriate. Sylverdin 23:15, 20 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Possible Topics[edit]

Just brainstorming here. Possible topics and content for the completed version might include: common activities or topics, praise and critisims, research supporting FHE, related topics, common structure to FHE (opening prayer, thought, activity, and the like), FHE for those without family, historic changes to FHE (if any exist), available FHE resource, . . . For Singles[edit]

As a single adult, I have had local Church authorities strongly suggest attending FHE by and for singles. Even though the primary focus of FHE is the family, singles (especially in singles wards, I believe) also hold FHE events. I remember doing it while in college. Or might this not be relevant for purposes of this article? I have no official documentation of this practice of FHE. Kitabparast 04:11, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There is no official documentation of a Single Adult FHE practice. In fact, Single Adults are not an official "auxiliary" of the Church (you will not find it mentioned in the handbook of instructions). However, there have been several official statements (in general conference) regarding single people (young or not) who do not have anyone to "meet" with. In the June 2003 First Presidency Message, President Faust explained:

Single members can gather under the direction of their priesthood leaders in small groups for gospel discussions and appropriate activities.

His talk also included an official statement made by the First presidency in 1976:

Family home evening is for everyone. It is for families with parents and children, for families with just one parent, and for parents who have no children at home. It is for home evening groups of single adults and for those who live alone or with roommates
