Self-published sources

There's still several references to blogspot and tumblr, so I disagree that all of the self-published sources are gone. Jackmcbarn (talk) 04:43, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

I've scanned through all of the references and found no self-published sources, at this time. At any rate, even if I missed one or two, there certainly aren't enough, out of 64 references to warrant the tag so I'm removing it.

If due to references being removed, there are unsupported claims made in the article, please either remove them (if you feel that they could be considered defamatory per WP:BLP) or add a {{fact}} tag to the claim so that we can address it specifically. On a side note, Jackmcbarn, when you reverted Roger and said that, "blogspot and tumblr (among other things) are self-published sources.", none of those blogspot references (all from a company the sponsors Evan) or tumblr references (don't think it's an official USOC tumblr) are self-published. Even if they were, none of them are being used to establish notability, support controversial information about anyone or anything, or primarly used to support information found in the article. To my count, even if they were self-pubslihed, 7 out of 63 references doesn't constitute a self-citing issue. OlYeller21^Talktome 20:03, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

COI and POV, Self-Sourced

As for the COI, I think that Roger has shown an understanding of the COI guideline and a willingness to work with others. At this point, I think we just need to assess whether or not the article has any POV issues brought on by the COI.

I've read through the article. Here is my assessment.

The only possible POV issue that I could find in the article is the mention that he "mastered snowboarding". "Mastered" being the subjective adjective. The reference doesn't say "mastered" but he did become a highly accomplished professional snowboarder. One could easily describe his accomplishments as "mastery" but I can see an argument for WP:OR. I'll change "mastered" to something less WP:POV.

The sections could be better formatted. Specifically, sections about his personal life, including the crash, can be subsections in a section. Similarly, his sports sections could be subsections in a sports section. I think this would help the article seem less like a laundry list of accomplishments, to which Evan obviously has many. I think that might make the article seem boastful but in reality, the guy has just accomplished a lot but that brings me to my next point.

The only other POV/COI issues I can think of is the possibility of omitted information. I've done some searching on my own (not much because I feel like a scumbag doing it) to find any possible negative coverage of Evan. I can't find anything that could have been omitted. As for the self-published sources, we really threw the baby out with the bath water on that one. Self-published sources can absolutely be used as long as the fit the criteria listed at WP:SELFPUB. Because we've given Roger the feeling that all self-published sources are bad, we've lost several sources that supported claims that aren't controversial, like that Evan "enjoys rock climbing, archery and slack lining." There's absolutely no reason that a blog post of Evan's can't be used to support that claim.

If someone has a problem with a self-published source being used, they need to discuss it, specifically, on this talk page. At this point, I think the placement of the template was probably in error (I admit that I haven't gone through every single diff in the history) because of a misunderstanding of WP:SELFPUB.

I'll be removing the last tag and changing the one POV adjective I could find. OlYeller21^Talktome 19:35, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
