Talk: Evan Baillie The article appears to be based mainly on RG Thorne (ed) History of Parlliament. The biography there is simply out of touch. It certainly IS known that Baillie visited the West Indies. His Inverness Courier obituary suggests he was present at the siege of Havana, in what may have been a staff appointment. He had earlier served in Martinique. A 1773 letter on the Highland Council Am Baile website, from Dr John Alves,who had married a cousin of Evan Baillie, Helen Baillie of the Dunain family, to his brother in law, William Baillie, in the East India Company's military service and who died in captivity in Seringapatam in 1782, indicates that in that year Evan Baillie had returned to Britain after 16 years in the Caribbean establishing himself in Bristol and buying the Inverness estate of Kinmylies for £10,000. He probably did not serve in the American War of Independence, but he was certainly a colonle of volunteers in Bristol during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.
