Separate article for Mogador[edit]

Shouldnt there be a separate article for mogador? which would emphasize the ancient history of the Phoenician settlement. also the article refers to mogador as a portugese name. it is not portugese in origin, but Phoenician. Ouedbirdwatcher 20:49, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ouedbirdwatcher, your question is quite old now, but I see that you're still around. I'm not too sure about a separate article, because there is no clear-cut timeline to distinguish the use of Mogador and Essaouira for the same town. It is believed that Mogador has a Phoenician origin, because a stone inscription Mogon was found, but that is just a theory, the name appears at 1311 on Italian maps and is used by European sailors and merchants well into the 20th century... well, it is used even today and is the only one to appear in some European school maps as late as 1957. The name Essaouira became the official one only after the independence. And then it is believed that the name Essaouira is also of Phoenician origin and might be as old as Mogador. So I think it would add only confusion. But a larger history section would be fine, I'll work on it. --Ilyacadiz (talk) 01:59, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I'll create a separate article for "History of Essaouira" where a lot of things could be explained without disrupting too much the main article for the city of Essaouira. We might then create a disambiguation page for "Mogador" which could point both to "Essaouira" - the city has been called 'Mogador' well into the 20th century - or to "History of Essaouira" for those who search for historic information. Moroccan Arabic speakers...[edit]

Hello, Moroccan Arabic Wikipeditors. This article needs a recording of a native speaker pronouncing the name of the city, Essaouira with native pronunciation, showing us non-natives what it really sounds like. According to the Etymology section, it's pronounced with "with pharyngealized /ṣ/ and /ṛ/". I am eager to hear a pharyngealized sibilant. Would anyone possessing a microphone like to give it a try?
