Elbridge or Eldridge?[edit]

The reference document lists 74 uses of "Elbridge," married to Hannah, but the BLM Land Grant records show an Eldridge and Hannah Trask in Tillamook County. The BLM online data shows a date of 1873, after the 1863 death of El-bridge/drige but is not indexed to a land patent document nor attached to an image of a document. The Greek letter phi (Φ) might provide a compromise, although the pronunciation would then be closer to Elfridge. Be this as it may, Colonel James Taylor occupied the Trask property and ran cattle for the nearby Methodist outpost, and he thought it was Eldridge. I went ahead and redirected Eldridge Trask to this article and added an aka, feel free to source the new info. Greek letters would just muddy the issue for the average reader. It's fine to add an aka as I've done here. If he is more commonly known as Eldridge (I've seen many such mistakes in early settler names, due to various factors), let me know if you need help moving the article. Your method is more sensible. I added two sources for the aka, and I hope they are in the right format. Do you think the article should be moved? Both names seem to be legit. Geirfuglasker (talk) 02:23, 23 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I got more g-hits (google hits) for Elbridge on both the Internet and Google Books so I think we should leave it where it is. Thanks for the cites, I'll tidy them if they need it. Valfontis (talk) 03:21, 23 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

As a direct descendant of Elbridge Trask I can varify the correct spelling of his name. I am in possession of a number of documents and family records that list Elbridge as correct. There is a annual family reunion at the Trask State park on the Trask River near Tillamook every fall. His grave marker is written as Elbridge.
