I plan to make major edits to this page soon. Ear protection from the elements such as cold temperature, water, and debris should be directed to the earplugs page. I suggest this page will now be titled "Hearing protection devices" since there is no such Wikipedia page in existence for HPDs. It will discuss the types/classifications of HPDs, regulations related to HPDs, noise reduction ratings, and other pertinent information. Tessa Mannlein (talk) 20:00, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Today I am adding many section to this article and changing the title from "Ear protection" to "Hearing protection devices" Tessa Mannlein (talk) 20:37, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

After further investigation, I am not able to change the title of a Wikipedia page, and I created a new page called "Hearing protection devices." I will redirect this page to the new page. Tessa Mannlein (talk) 20:47, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Why don't you propose your changes here first, for discussion. bd2412 T 21:13, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Damage[edit]

I think there should be some information about how not wearing hearing protection can damage hearing permanently. Also I think there could be some information about how much noise reduction each of the listed hearing protection gives to show the reduction from the 85 dBA limit. A hyperlink to the amount of noise and the maximum amount of time a person should be exposed to the sound before becoming damaging to their hearing.(Sallie.croissant (talk) 21:19, 22 January 2019 (UTC))[reply]

Redirect[edit]

I think this article should redirect to Hearing protection devices. Solgard (talk) 19:04, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • How would that accommodate earmuffs, which are ear protection against the cold, but not necessarily directed to protection of hearing? bd2412 T 19:21, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
This could be handled by merging most of the content of this article to Hearing protection device and retaining this page as a WP:DISAMBIG pointing to Hearing protection device, Earmuffs and maybe Helmet. I have put up merge banners directing editors to this talk page section for further discussion. ~Kvng (talk) 18:24, 25 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hearing protection device, Earmuffs and Helmet are not ambiguous to each other, they are WP:DABCONCEPT terms for different kinds of protection for different aspects of ears. BD2412 T 19:16, 25 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
BD2412, do you have any suggestions? ~Kvng (talk) 15:20, 28 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I support moving of all hearing-related content in the “ear” article, save for a paragraph providing a link, into the “hearing” one. I think we should not do a full merge due to the “physical protection” point raised. Artoria2e5 🌉 02:57, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have merged hearing protection content from here (Ear protection) to Hearing protection device. There's not much left here now. ~Kvng (talk) 14:40, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Strategies to help protect your hearing from firearms[edit]

the paragraph towards the end "Strategies to help protect your hearing from firearms also include using muzzle brakes and suppressors, shooting less rounds, and using a firearm with a shorter barrel" is incorrect and should be revised. A shorter barrel and a muzzle brake both increase the volume and amplitude of a firearm.75.189.129.99 (talk) 21:17, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
