Old excerpt

1.) To be able to understand a dream, it must fristly be understood that every dream has four basic functions:

1.1) To fullfill a WISH of the sleeper. This is true even for nightmares (c.f. examples under 2). These wishes go back to those from childhood (narcissistic desires etc.) 1.2) To REGULATE the sleepers MOOD. 1.3) To help dealing with everyday life. This function is called MATERY. 1.4) To stop neurotic constituents. Dreams thus have a THERAPEUTIC FUNCTION.

2.) 'TYPICAL DREAMS' WITH THE SAME MEANING:

2.1) Dream of being nacked and ashamed: This dream is caused by unconscious exhibitionistic wishes. One the one hand, the dreamer is embarrased and wants to leave (i.e. the I* wants to leave) but somehow he cannot ( because the IT makes it impossible). Characteristically, in these dreams the people around are not appalled. This derives from childhood experiences, in which being naked in front of others was socially accepted.

2.2) Dream of the death of a beloved person: The dreamer wishes indeed the death of this person. However this wish does not come from his/her present day life. It comes, again, from childhood, in which 'to die' merely meant 'to go away'. In other words, the dreamer wishes that what he/she interpreted as a CHILD when he heard 'to die' should happen to this person.

2.3) Dream of having to take a feared exam: This dream typically occurs before exams in real life. It fullfills the wish of the sleeper to be comforted by showing him that he has gone through these kind of situations before.

  • ) terms from the STRUCTURE-THEORIE. Oversimplyfied, I is our consciousness, which is aware of the rules of society. IT are unconscious impulses and desires.

Being attacked

I had this dream that I was at a party with my friends we were having a good time. I was spending some time with a close friend in a room when men covered in blood whelding knives came into the room. That was when I woke up

Falling

In school the teacher talked about one "falling" from the effect of drugs or sometimes from other experiences. I feel this is strange as sometimes i cannot interpret my dreams. For example, once (or probably many times) i have awoke from a dream as i fall from a great height and hit the ground (i believe). I awake when i come in impact with the ground...unexplainable

Someone Needs to Finish This

This was last updated in January and it still has placefillers.

I don't know enough about dream interpretations to finish it, I was actually looking for this information, so if any kind soul will be a fine gentle(wo)man and do your civic duty, the world will be a better place.

The way forward, and Oneiromancy

Questions:

  1. This article has various "to be written" parts. Isn't this against Wikipedia policy?
  2. This article covers—or tries to cover—both psychological dream interpretation and mantic or spiritual methods. I look at Oneiromancy and wonder if maybe we should consider the articles together.
  • We could combine the article, presumable into "Dream interpretation," which would cover both topics.
  • We could separate the topics; everything "magical," "mantic" or "spiritual" would go to Oneiromancy (with a suitable in-article reference). "Dream interpretation" would only cover psychological theories.

Harmony

This is not non-point of view. It needs to be tagged, but I don't know how.

Nevermind, I just got rid of the offending bit about people always being amazed by his skill.

Freud

Please go through and cite each point you make from The The Interpretation of Dreams. If you do, I think you will find that some of the points made are not directly from Freud, but are the result of your interpretation. Those should be deleted. Especially be careful of how you use "superego" and "ego" etc. The concept of "superego" came about in 1923, long after Freud wrote "The Interpretation of Dreams", and the word "superego" appears only in two little footnotes of later editions.

The superego does not censor dreams, rather dreams are censored by a device that works to prevent the sleeper from awaking by censoring dangerous material that would surprise the dreamer's consciousness and cause him or her to wake up. Correct me if I am wrong, but the preconscious doesn't have anything to do with this. The preconscious has no agency. It doesn't act on its own. It merely is the store room for information accessible but generally not in the consciousness itself.

Another problem is the your discussion of nightmares. Where did you find that? Certainly not in The Interpretation of Dreams. I am not a psychologist, I am just interested in psychoanalysis. If Freud made the statements that you accredited him with making, I would be interested in reading them. But your article doesn't cite its sources, so I can't go and read about them. Helping people to find information is one of the functions of the Wikipedia. So please finish your work.

One more point -- the dream work: It is very clear that the first dream work is condensation and the second is displacement. But the third should be "considerations of representability" Symbolism falls into that category, symbols are the way that thoughts are represented. But don't listen to me re-read the book and make adjustments. By the way page numbers should be from the standard edition (available at a university or big public library... it's blue and is made up of 20 volumes)

I can see that you put hard work into this page, and I do not want to make changes to your work, but somebody will if you don't make proper adjustments Each sentence must be well thought out. Each piece of information must be verifiable. Tens of thousands of people will be reading your work!

Jungian Emphasis

Jung appeared to emphasize the "purposive compensatory" aspect of dreams, and the "personal, subjective interpretation" of dreams. He also pointed out that comprehension of dreams can be accessible, but the capability is problematic. Often long dry spells are experienced by the subject in which dreams are not comprehensible. On a related point, Jung stressed that for symbols (as distinct from signs) the number of meanings possible is/are more or less inexhaustable. This compounds dream interpretation, but adds a richness of dimension not admitted by more simplistic methods.

Dream Interpretation site

I am asking permission to add a link to my dream interpretation site as I feel it is relevent and useful to this subject. I also wanted to add a link to the Dream Dictionary page as the dictionary on my site is an unusual one and helps readers come up with their own definitions.

Krista, as far as I can tell, your site isn't based on a particualy widely accepted methdology, isn't well known in dream interpretation circles and hasn't been mentioned by many (or any even?) siginficant publications. Our external links guidelines are not the most easy to follow but they do make it clear that external links need to be more than just relevent and useful, they need to add encyclopedic value. Your site seems to be more about people having a go at dream interpretation without making it clear what theory they are following, than about applying rigorous academic thought to dream interpretation. It doesn't seem to meet the level required to be included in an encyclopedia. --Siobhan Hansa 17:09, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Shameful treatment of Jung imo. Immediately I learn that he is a demagogue(according to Freud.)This is the first statement under Jung? Why don't you talk about how Freud took back his ring during their split and had him ostracized from that community. Petty for such a great man.

Nothing about Active Imagination, a technique from which I learned a great deal about my own dreams. Jung thought Freud too focused on sexuality.

External links section

The links in the external links section under Other related links appear to be of dubious provenance and lacking in encyclopedic value. In particular, none of the sites talk about the theories they are based on, none are peer reviewed or in any other way meet the standard for reliable sources, and most of them are basically doing the same thing - suggesting people keep dream journals and providing a "dream dictionary" to look up possible meanings. People are perfectly capable of searching for "dream interpretation" on google to find these sorts of sites. Ones we list here ought to be authoritative and well respected by experts in the field - and from what I can find, there really aren't any sites like this. Also the first four:

  1. Valasearch Dreams Section
  2. Dream Interpretations Based on Ancient Traditions
  3. Dream Interpretations
  4. Dream Dictionary

Appear to be google adsense revenue generation sites, and one is solicitning for email addresses. All of this is out of keeping with our external links guidelines and fails to add encyclopedic value to the article. I'd like to delete all of the links currently under Other related links, thoughts from other editors? --Siobhan Hansa 13:42, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

I agree, these links clearly do not meet the criteria laid out in Wikipedia's external links guidelines. They should be removed from the article. Editors should please abide by the external links guidelines and avoid adding links to sites that aren't reliable. Thanks, Gwernol
Does that kevinnwilson link need to be there at all, let alone twice, it seems a bit odd? Also there are two sites with freudfile in the URL, one might be spoofing the other or they're owned by the same person, and they are both selling an e-book and online courses. I don't think we need those links either? Jonathanpops 09:05, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
The freudfile ones appear to have been spammed by an IP address who also adds links to another site registered to the same person - I've removed them. The Kevinwilson site looks like a personal site which I don't think is appropriate for a subject like this. But if it's kept the two links seem to be the only reasonable way to make both the Freud and Jung articles available to readers - site navigation is not very friendly. I'm definitely not looking to keep the articles though. -- Siobhan Hansa 12:14, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Catholic encyclopedia article

This was posted on the article by User:JASpencer but it seemed more like a request to editors than and encyclopedic addition so I'cve moved it here.

This article has a corresponding article from the public-domain Catholic Encyclopedia http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/05154a.htm that could be used as a source in this article, but with caution, as it may be out of date, or may reflect the point of view of the Catholic Church as of 1913.

Recent external link additions

Two links:

  • unclesirbobby.org.uk/dreamessay.php "Research articles on various dream symbols"

and

Have been added a couple of times. These don't appear to be appropriate.

The first seems to be a self published site with no clear provenance. Other than the domain names registration details it seems to be anonymous. And the second while it has some of the trappings of authority (it's published by the Wilhelm-Griesinger-Institut and is at least not anonymous) still doesn't seem to be significant. There are thousands dream theorists around and including them when they do not already have a significant reputation is against our core policies. It's possible I've missed something in my research and Flöttmann is in fact significant, in which case I really think we need to put his work in context by including well sourced content in the article itself - not simply a link in the external links section. -- SiobhanHansa 09:58, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

The unclesirbobby link was re added by the site's owner (see: [1] and [2]) and I have removed it again. Editors are specifically asked not to add links to sites they are involved with directly to the article (see our guidelines). Please gain consensus on this talk page before re-adding it. -- SiobhanHansa 18:03, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Odd quotes/translations

The following quote of Freud is very odd:

You entirely disregard the apparent connections between the elements in the manifest dream and collect the ideas that occur to you in connection with each separate element of the dream by free association according to the psychoanalytic rule of procedure. From this material you arrive at the latent dream-thoughts, just as you arrived at the patient's hidden complexes from his associations to his symptoms and memories...The true meaning of the dream, which has now replaced the manifest content, is always clearly intelligible.

In German there is no correspondent to "you" in the sense of "one", and in the context given it is highly unlikely that a German, be it in his native language or when writing English, would have used a formulation like this. I note that even English standard use in Freud's days would have ruled the use of "you" out (and even today there are many who consider it a sign of incompetence and a source of unnecessary ambiguity). A German text would have used a construct based on "I", "we", "one", or similar, but not "you". Obviously, any translation into English should reflect this; obviously, most highly educated Germans (and Austrians) in the early twentieth century would have kept to the same conventions when writing in English.

Because no source is given (bad author!), I cannot do more than speculate, but I very, very strongly encourage you to verify this quote, replace it, or remove it entirely. 94.220.249.30 (talk) 05:52, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

You are a complete fucking idiot. The quote is word-for-word from the official translation of the Standard Edition of Freud's writings. See the Five Lectures on Psycho-Analysis (1909); Lecture Three. Moron. Pfistermeister (talk) 15:50, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

Orphaned references in Dream interpretation

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Dream interpretation's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "Lutz":

  • From Psychology in medieval Islam: Lutz, Peter L. (2002), The Rise of Experimental Biology: An Illustrated History, Humana Press, p. 60, ISBN 0896038351
  • From Avicenna: Lutz, Peter L. (2002). The Rise of Experimental Biology: An Illustrated History. Humana Press. p. 60. ISBN 0896038351. OCLC 47894348.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 23:07, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Misuse of sources

This article has been edited by a user who is known to have misused sources to unduly promote certain views (see WP:Jagged 85 cleanup). Examination of the sources used by this editor often reveals that the sources have been selectively interpreted or blatantly misrepresented, going beyond any reasonable interpretation of the authors' intent.

Please help by viewing the entry for this article shown at the cleanup page, and check the edits to ensure that any claims are valid, and that any references do in fact verify what is claimed. Tobby72 (talk) 19:11, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

Schools of interpretation

intersteller travel

I was standing on a planet near a structure looking in to space. At first I just seen one moon in the last quarter then I noticed another then another. Three in all to my upper left then five to my lower right. I lifted my camera to take pictures this is when it came into view. I seen a large blueish triangled shape in their orbit then I seen a ship in orbit as I zoomed my camer and continuied taking pictures I seen schematics on the side of the ship. I couldnt read them but I remember part of one line of them. It was mostley lines and emblems. I was aware of my flash from my camera and It had attrackted to beings. They approched me on seperate rolling vehicles. I waved and they walked up to me. They looked like u and I. They spoke but I couldn't understand they coul understand me though. They used a device to scan my body sominthin similar to a metal detector but not. It had and electrical charge coming from it. As he checked my knee he stopped and I reconnised his words uranium and Iraq.he had found traces of it in my knee. I went on to tell him I had been there and i must have picked it up through patrol while taking a knee.I asked if he had ever been there and he shook his head yes. I told them that we hadnt figured out intersteller travel yet. I believe that was the schematics on the side of the ship but I cant remember them except fpr the emblem of the last quarter of the moon shape and a straight line following it. The planet I did not see just what I described above. Any thoughts on this dream? Xxrazorrainxx (talk) 10:48, 21 October 2016 (UTC)
