"Britain's first black music pirate radio station"?[edit]

The source that is currently cited to verify DBC as "Britain's first black music pirate radio station" is from 1981. However, this source mentions there were other pirate black music radio stations that came before (including London-based Radio Invicta). Should this statement be taken out or updated in some way (with more current sources)? - Whisperjanes (talk) 16:29, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Whisperjanes, It's a fair point. However I think the reality was that DBC was a radio station by and for the black community, playing a variety of styles, and the first such, while Invicta was just a soul music station. DBC's first transmitter came from Radio City, who played rockabilly including a lot of black artists, yet there was affinity for the Confederacy. The offshore pirates also played a lot of soul, but they were not considered black music stations. I've read that Lepke was more influenced stylistically by NYC stations such as Gil Bailey on WHBI. By coincidence, I googled up Gil Bailey, only to discover he just died. Now there's someone who deserves some wikiLove. Perhaps the obits will provide sufficient RS. Wwwhatsup (talk) 08:00, 15 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wwwhatsup Ahh, I see! Thanks for the explanation (and for replying so quickly -- talk pages can sometimes be a dead zone). It seems fine to leave it then. Also, seeing as it's a bigger claim, it would definitely be bolstered if there was a more updated citation included in addition to the 1981 source (but I can understand if there aren't many newer sources out there, since this is what some would consider a niche topic). And thanks for the mention of Gil Bailey (although I'm sad to hear he passed). I'm a bit surprised to see he doesn't have a Wikipedia page, since he seems to be notable enough, but hopefully there are enough reliable sources now, if there weren't before, to pass WP:GNG. - Whisperjanes (talk) 16:51, 15 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
