Correct name[edit]

Please explain why this Rabbi's name is recorded as Dovber, whhen in fact, these are two separate names: Dov and Be'er (both meaning Bear). Dov is the Hebrew name, and Be'er is the same name in Yiddish - it happens that Eastern European Jewry often mixed the two languages and recorded an individual's name in both Hebrew and Yiddish. What is also of interest is that his name written in Hebrew has been removed from the page, and there is no European name recorded. Jews normally recorded names in refernece to their patronymic lineage, refering to son of so-and-so, or Ben or Bar (son of Rabbi). In this case, as legisleted by law, Dov Be'er has been given a family name, Schneuri - refering to the name of his father, Scheur Zalman (there is a good explanation of how the family name morphed into Schneerson) - but there is no European name stated. Would the authhor please consider correcting the name (Dov Be'er), and reincluding the name in Hebrew, with the patronymic Bewn Scheur? SZAgassi 12:45, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dovber is perhaps unusual in that it is sometimes considered two separate names, and sometimes fused into one name. In the case of this rabbi, the latter is the case. As anyone who can read Hebrew can see in the title page of books that he wrote, the name is written as one word, not two. True, Jews follow the patronymic, but in his time family names had begun, and that is the way people are referred to until today, so I think this is the appropriate title.
