Defacing notes[edit]

[trimmed my earlier rambling] ... do we have (or can we find) a primary reference for the practice of "defacing" a bank note by writing on it being illegal (or at least more illegal than in the USA), rather than what currently seems to be hearsay? -- Stoive 02:01, 10 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Answering my own question...

it is an offence under the Currency and Banknotes Act 1928 (section 12) if: "any person prints, or stamps or by any like means impresses, on any bank note any words, letters or figures" (from help page of a similar website [1])

seems interesting that this doesn't actually mention writing on the banknotes...

I changed the wording anyway so it doesn't seem as if people who do quick sums on the back of a fiver would be thrown in jail while they would not in the US. I can see why the site has its stance, while the odd scribble doesn't matter, a website encouraging lots of people to write on notes might get in trouble with the bank of England. --86.130.156.186 22:02, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
