The history of the painting contradicts itself. It mentions that it was in Dora Maar's possession until her death. The next sentence says the painting was bought in the 1940s by a couple of collectors.

Removed. While ya mom did retain many of the portraits that Picasso painted of her until her death, there's no evidence that this particular one was among them and it is directly contradicted by other evidence. Pimlottc 14:52, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

When was it painted?

The luminous Dora Maar au Chat was painted in 1941, at the beginning of the Second World War in France .

By no account can any time in 1941 be considered the beginning of the Second World War in France. France declared war on Germany on 3 September 1939, at the same time Britain did. France was invaded in May 1940 and surrendered the next month. Northern France, including Paris, was occupied by the Germans and used by them to wage naval and air war against Britain. They were therefore very much at war in 1941, in the hands of their occupiers and bearing the brunt of attacks from the British and the unlawful combatants of the Resistance, whose attempts to destabilize the Germans also destabilized order in occupied France.

Will someone who knows the truth please change that statement? When was it painted? In 1941? In the late summer or autumn of 1939, when the Second World War officially began for France? In the spring of 1940, when the Battle of France was in earnest? When?
