Two observations:

1. The translation of the Annals of the Four Masters published by UCC's CELT project says that Donnell's death occurred on 14 September 1590, not 3 September.

2. Could there be a major mistake in Donnell's year of death? Should it perhaps be 1592 rather than 1590?

There is a cryptic entry in the Calendar of State Papers, # 21 for January of 1592 that may refer to Donnell. This comes from page 457 of an Internet Archive digitization of a 1974 re-issue of the 1885 original.

This man is never mentioned by name but instead referred to indirectly as eldest living son of Sir Hugh O'Donnell by his first marriage, which would certainly describe Donnell himself but for the date of the entry, 1592, supposedly two years after his death.

I have seen an attempt to equate this unnamed man of 1592 with the semi-legendary 'Donnchadh Scaite', of whom no definite trace exists in the authentic historical record. This is from an article by Rupert O Cochlain, page 278 of the 1950 edition of the Journal of Donegal Historical Society. But the scenario presented in the Calendar, of a proposed rebellion against the regency of Ineen Dubh, seems to closely reflect Donnell's career.
