San Jose or San José?[edit]

The majority of the Hal David and Burt Bacharach sites that I just looked at use "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" as the title of this song. No question mark or accent on the "e." Same with an image of the sheet music on eBay. The lyrics I found had a question mark at the end of the first line, but not at the end of the title. This page should be moved to the existing one with the correct style and turned into a redirect. --Hjal 19:02, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits, 8th edition lists "San José", but The Billboard Book of #1 Adult Contemporary Hits mentions "San Jose" in the article about the song "Heartbreaker". Seems both are acceptable, but the city in California is usually spelled "San Jose", without the accent. Zephyrnthesky (talk) 04:21, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In 1979, the city adopted the diacritical mark for use in official documents. However, the city was declared in its 1965 charter, still operative, to be "City of San Jose." The 1968 song, as one might expect from this time-line, never officially used the diacritical mark. So it really doesn't make any sense to use it here, just because a 2004 book decided to modernize/Latinize the title. Calbaer (talk) 04:47, 27 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There is no accent on the single that is displayed on this page (and, for that matter, I would challenge anyone to find ANY album with this song that displays an accented "e"). It doesn't matter whether the California city of San Jose presently uses one or not (according to the above, it didn't use it when the song was written). The name of the song is the name of the song, even if there are spelling errors. End of story. 24.57.70.12 (talk) 13:02, 5 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have moved it back to "...San Jose" (without the diacritic). It was moved (without discussion) quite some time ago, but the move was wrong. The song does not use the diacritic. Horologium (talk) 04:05, 3 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Opening line[edit]

The first two sentences are ""Do You Know the Way to San Jose" is a 1968 popular song written and composed for singer Dionne Warwick by Burt Bacharach. Hal David wrote the lyrics." The first sentence implies that Bacharach wrote both music and lyrics, while the second is explicit that Davis wrote the lyrics. Not sure how best to rewrite.
