I'm not 100% sure, but I think that dispersants and plasticizers are entirely different things, contrary to the current lead sentence of the article. ike9898 (talk) 21:10, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You are right that they are completely different. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gerben1973 (talkcontribs) 11:11, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have fixed that --Langbein Rise (talk) 11:10, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What are "dispersants"? Industry sources do not appear willing to divulge the actual chemical composition of dispersants. Why? Trade secret? Or is it (more likely) environmental toxicity, slow degradation, and/or other negative environmental impact? Industry is generating suspicion (again) by lack of forthrightness. If it takes poison to fight poison, let's discuss that, and not keep the ball hidden. Offshore drilling appears similar to nuclear power in that the companies keep certain costs, possibly very big ones, hidden off the balance sheet in the hope of maintaining favorable public opinion. Eventually, the truth comes out and the damage is far worse -- Old Ph.D. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.245.183.76 (talk) 12:22, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Additions to "oil spill"[edit]

I would like to add information from 2 EPA sources to more fully cover this topic. Additions would include mention that dispersants are believed to increase the rate of biodegradation of oil, conclusions of newer EPA toxicity tests on the dispersants used during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill to show both sides of the toxicity issue instead of just one, the fact that dispersant use is a trade-off between allowing a slick to impact a shore, birds etc. and potentially impacting water column animals and the gallons of dispersant used on the Deepwater Horizon spill. Sentence about use on the Exxon Valdez spill could be removed as that is no longer the most recent large spill. thanks. Johnn boyd (talk) 16:45, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
