Impossible proposal

How could Hester propose to his wife on July 23, 2005 at a Heat game, when the NBA post season ends in mid to late June?

Return Specialist

There has to be more ways to describe what he does than just return specialist. It is mentioned in 7 places in the article and 9 times on the page. --Murder1 07:32, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

GA on hold

I have reviewed this article according to the GA criteria and have decided to put the article on hold until a few things are fixed.

  1. "Hester attended Suncoast High School. During his high school career, he played football as a cornerback, wide receiver, and running back." Combine the two sentences, such as "Hester attended Suncoast High School where he played football as a cornerback, wide receiver, and running back."
  2. Reword the first four sentences in the Early life section as they sound redundant. Also, He is not supposed to be capitalized in the fifth sentence. The same thing happens in the second sentence of the next section.
  3. Add a wikilink for Deion Sanders in the Collegiate career section. In the Professional career section, add a wikilink for Seattle Seahawks and NFC
  4. Add an inline citation for "The feat was the first touchdown return in an opening kickoff in Super Bowl history."
  5. Bible doesn't need to be italicized.
  6. Add upcoming before Madden NFL 2008.

These are all really minor issues that shouldn't take too long to fix. Finish these changes within seven days and I'll pass the article. Let me know on my talk page when you are done or if you have any questions and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. --Nehrams2020 07:59, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

For the second point, I meant that the third paragraph in the Early life section should be reworded. "was also a fan of", is used a couple of times, so just reword that. Punt returns for a touchdown

Is it necessary to list every time he returns a punt for a touchdown? At the rate he's going, he's sure to break some records, but I think it'll make the article too long. Just my thoughts. 64.241.230.3 14:13, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

From my experience, it's better to compile whatever data you can while it's still fresh, and then consolidate it later. Last year, this article basically gave a week-by-week summary of Hester's performance, but come April, we got rid of the needless things. Hester's record

Since I've made three reverts, I'm now recusing myself from this for at least twenty-four hours. However, I'm glad we've made a compromise with 108.4 and 108 yards. 1ne 04:33, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

I've removed the junk about 108.4 yards. No source was provided, but even so, records are not recorded that way, so it is non-notable, IMHO. If you do re-add this, it MUST be cited with a source. Dr. Cash 05:27, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Madden claimed it to be 108.4 yards. However there was no official measurement. All I remember was that he used one of his elaborate on-screen tools. 108.4 is still 108 yards; let's just leave it at that, and be thankful the Windy City Flyer graced us with such a performance. ;-) --ShadowJester07 05:33, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
I hate to quibble about something as trivial as four-tenths of a yard (particularly since the statement has now been removed) but, thinking back to high school chemistry and stuff about accuracy and significant digits, I don't think you can say Hester's return "would be an NFL record". Vasher's return was 108 yards, measured to the nearest yard. Hester's return was 108.4 yards, measured to the nearest tenth of a yard. Unless you can get a measurement on Vasher's return with the same degree of accuracy, you can't compare the two. For all we know, Vasher's return could have actually been longer, but there's no way to tell since it was only measured to the nearest yard. Besides, as far as the NFL is concerned it was 108 yards even, and it will go into the record books as such. Any supposed "records" that are based on that additional four-tenths of a yard will always be unofficial. BACON 06:33, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

It seems a little weird to say he tied a record by scoring two touchdowns on two separate kickoffs in the same game. The word "separate" seems unnecessary; you can't score more than one touchdown on a single kickoff, so I'll change it. DBurba 23:02, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

Hester Records to Update

Hester set a single-game franchise record with 314 Return yards, which is second all time to the Saints Tyrone Hughes who had 347. He did this Sept. 30th, 2007 (week 4) against the Lions.

With his 64-yard punt return last Sunday, Hester became the first player in NFL history to accumulate at least 600 punt-return yards in two seasons. With 651 yards this season, he broke the Bears record he set last year with 600 yards. (The Wiki Page currently list 518 punt return yards in 2006 as a franchise record. Though he finished the season with 600 on the dot. NFL.com or ESPN.com can show you this.)

Hester has now won seven NFC special teams player of the week awards, including four this season. Since the NFL started announcing player of the week awards for each conference in 1984, Hester’s seven special teams honors are tied with Hall for the most among return men.

Hester’s seven weekly awards are the most by a Bears player, surpassing the six that Richard Dent earned on defense.

All-Time Combined Kick Returns Placement

There seems to be some disagreement as where Hester is ranked in all-time combined kick returns. He is fourth. Brian Mitchell has 13 and Eric Metcalf has 12; this can be seen at the official NFL records page here: [3]. This page does NOT include statistics from the 2007 NFL season, so Dante Hall's listed number of 11 is incorrect; he had another this season. The correct number for Dante Hall (12) can be seen on his statistics page on NFL.com at this link: [4]. Since Mitchell, Hall, and Metcalf are all strictly ahead of Hester in combined kick return touchdowns, Hester is currently ranked fourth (although I think no one will be terribly surprised if he ends up first relatively soon). —Babcockd (talk) 22:37, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

It would be a good add for the kick returner article. I am of the impression that few people understand how high Hester's kickoff return percentage is with respect to all other great kick returners and see no reason why it should not be in his article. Longest play

Under the section "NFL records" It's said that Hester holds the franchise record for "Longest play (108 yards)* - Against New York Giants on November 12, 2006" shared with Nathan Vasher.

But last time I checked that record belongs to San Diego Charger's Antoine Cromartie for his TD vs Minnesota Vikings when he did a 109.70 FG return during the 2007 season?

The following week, Cromartie made NFL history. Minnesota Vikings kicker Ryan Longwell came onto the field to attempt a 58-yard field goal to end the first half. The Chargers put Cromartie in the endzone to return the field goal in case of a missed kick. The field goal attempt missed the goalposts and fell toward the back of the endzone. Cromartie caught the football, came down with both feet in bounds,two inches from the back of the end zone, and began the return against mostly linemen. The record is filed under Franchise Records, not league records. For example, Richard Dent holds the Bears franchise record for most career sacks with 124.5, where as Bruce Smith holds the league's record with 200. Additionally, players allowed to return missed field goals that land in bounds. --ShadowJester07 ► Talk 13:16, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Number

How is he able to keep the number 23 despite playing wide receiver. The league has their numbering rules and receivers are 10-19 and 80-89. So, how does he get 23? We need to find a reference for this so it can be added. Crash Underride 04:47, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

I recall reading this article on the Bears website which talks about WRs on the team changing their numbers. According to Bears football guru Larry Mayer, "Hester, meanwhile, will remain No. 23. While the NFL requires wide receivers to wear numbers 10-19 and 80-89, the league ruled that Hester doesn’t have to switch because No. 23 is an eligible number that will allow him to play receiver without reporting to the referee." I am not sure if the League just made that exception for Hester, or for some other reason. --  StarScream1007  ►Talk  15:42, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

Ok, granted he wasn't as popular as Hester is, but Dwayne Carswell established himself as the Denver Broncos tight end and wore a number in the 80-89 range, however later in his career, when he was moved to offensive line he switched to 77. Now why would he have too? I mean, they shouldn't make an exception for one person and not the other. After all, when Michael Jordan first retired, the Chicago Bulls retired #23 and when he came back the first time, he wore #45 because his old number was retired, granted the team un-retired it, just so he could wear it again. I think we need to find an official reason fcrom the NFL, where we can provide a good reference and include in in the article in the section where it talks about his switch to receiver. Dwayne Carswell moved from an eligible position to an ineligible position. He could have kept it but would have to report to the ref every play. Players with a year at a position can keep the number if the switch positions.--75.194.166.110 (talk) 05:40, 23 April 2012 (UTC)

These blog entires, [6][7] by Chicago Sun-Times columnists Vaughn McClure and Brad Biggs support Chris' idea that the change was based on jersey sales. I do not think the league will overtly come out and say it, but they probably just let Hester keep his jersey because of all the #23 jerseys they had already had in their warehouses. :p --  StarScream1007  ►Talk  14:25, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
Then I feel it should be noted in the article about the league's ruling. I mean, how many people, such as myself, have come to this article looking for an explaination as to why he got to keep it, yet couldn't find anything? I think that'd be a good number of people. A Couple of Fixes Needed

In the opening paragraph it says:

"Hester holds the league's all-time record for most touchdown returns in a season."

You don't "return touchdowns" like the post office sent it back or you took your stuff back to Circuit City. They are "KICK" returns, not "touchdown" returns. Please re-word this sentence. Pretend that the reader knows nothing about football, they are 10 years old and from Italy or someplace. It should be: "for most kick returns for a touchdown in a season."

In the "Personal life" section, second paragraph:

"Ever since his record-breaking performance against the Rams, Hester has been offered marketing opportunities from Nike, soft drink businessmen, and cell phone companies."

Be consistent, say: "Nike, soft drink and cell phone companies." Don't say "companies-person-companies", say either "person-person-person", or "companies-companies-companies".

IMHO, first line should read "Devin Hester (born November 4, 1982) is an American football player who plays wide receiver and return specialist for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League. All references to Hester being the first person in UM history to play offense, defense and special teams should be deleted as they are obviously false. Further, such assertions are unsupported by the cited references. Those of us old enough can remember when there was limited substitution and players played both ways. The article now says: "where he became the first person in the university’s recent history to play in all three phases of American football (offense, defense, special teams)." What the heck does "first person in recent history" mean?? He's possibly the last one in their history to do so, and also the first since the pre-platoon era (or something like that), but that claim needs some work! NFL Free Agency 2014

A reminder that NFL Free Agency in 2014 will begin on March 11 at 4:00PM ET.[8] That is also when Hester will officially no longer be a member of the Chicago Bears. He has not been listed as terminated or released on NFL.com [9]. Deion Sanders Record Comparision

Over the last year many media outlets have compared Hester's 19 special team returns to Deion Sanders 19 return touchdowns. This wikipedia article currently makes this comparison by showing Hester's combined special teams return touchdowns, career: 19 (13 punts, 5 kickoffs, 1 missed field goal) as "tied with Deion Sanders (19)".

Deion does not have 19 special team returns. His touchdown returns are primarily defensive, including 9 interceptions and 1 fumble recovery. http://www.nfl.com/player/deionsanders/2502820/careerstats

I cannot find any other example of combining touchdowns from more than one phase to make a record. This seems like a random statistic thrown together so that Sanders could have an NFL record. On the individual NFL records wiki they list Deion's record under "Miscellaneous" while Devin's shows under the proper category of "Combined kick/punt returns". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deion_Sanders

I recommend that the "Tied with Deion" line either be deleted altogether or expanded to explain that Deion's record includes interception and fumble returns.Ubergestalt (talk) 19:25, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

Sr. suffix

As far as I can tell, "Devin Hester Sr." has only 88 Google News hits—the most recent being back in 2017—while "Devin Hester" has over 14,000. The current fairly longstanding version has Sr. before you unilaterally changed it without opening a request at WP:RM. Follow your own advise. You're not entitled to your own rules just because you're a sysop. We had established consensus long ago. "Google new hits" has nothing to do with WP:COMMONNAME (I highly suggest you read through the entire article). Under this rationale, Steve Smith Sr. should be changed back to Steve Smith (he was in the public eye as "Steve Smith" for 15 years, so obviously there are more "Google news hit" with "Steve Smith" than Sr.) and Odell Beckham Jr. should be changed back to Odell Beckham. Eric Enfermero is hardly a neutral voice and has pretty clearly been Wikipedia:Wikistalking me since this exchange on my talkpage [10] and has been on a crusade to deliberately impede my editing. As for Bagumba, I highly suggest you read WP:OWN in light of your conduct at List of nicknames used in basketball. The history of that page [11] clearly indicates you feel you have ownership over that page. When someone finally stands up to you, you have unsurprisingly resorted to employing low-quality tactics out of personal vendetta (i.e. a low-rent wikistalking harassment campaign) and deliberately trying to sabotage longstanding consensus/compromise. I also agree that 'Devin Hester' is the common name. Steve Smith made a special case given his jersey actually reads, "Smith Sr", and that is how he addressed by the media. I'm not strongly opposed to naming this article "Devin Hester Sr." as that is his legal name, but he's most commonly known as just 'Devin Hester'. --  StarScream1007  ►Talk  03:03, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
