The epitaph reads DEEN not Dean as the Wikipedia page entry suggests[edit]

The photograph of Sake 'Deen' Mahomed's tombstone reads 'Deen' not Dean. This surely is a glaring error due to the fact that 'Dean' is an English name but in India/Arabic means 'religion'. Whilst I've not come across 'Sake' and assume this meant Sheikh perhaps, the spelling of Mahomed varies and is more phonetic according to personal preference although Mahomet is used by Turks. However, the tombstone clearly shows his name as 'Sake Deen Mahomed' and I'm surprised this is such a glaring error in the name of an otherwise notable person with a semi-protected Wikipedia page entry! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shahzadarif (talk • contribs) 12:49, 15 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

 Not done: I'm pretty sure that's the street address, not the age at which he died, given that the sentence as written also says he died at age 91-92. Copy edit first sentence[edit]

The lead sentence is confusing and contorted. "Born in 1759 in the city of Patna, then part of the Bengal Presidency, Mahomed came from Buxar." Mahomed was porn in Patna in 1759 and grew up in Buxar. -Reagle (talk) 14:22, 15 January 2019 (UTC) wE REALLY DON'T CARE![reply]

Semi-Protected Edit Request 01/15/19[edit]

The introductory sentence states that he is an "Anglo-Indian". Wikipedia defines Anglo Indian as one of either mixed British/Indian ancestry or a British citizen who moved to the Indian subcontinent. He was born in India to Indian parents. Based on the published definition, should the "Anglo" portion be dropped? Special:Contributions/173.44.65.240

Date of birth[edit]

The date of birth is shown as 1759. In the preface to his publication Shampooing, he writes that The humble Author of these sheets...was born in the year 1749...was educated to the profession of, and served in the Company's Service as, a Surgeon, which capacity I afterwards relinquished, and acted in a military character, exclusively, for nearly fifteen years. In the year 1780, I was appointed to a company under General, then Major Popham; and, at the commencement of the year 1784, left the service and came to Europe, where I have resided ever since.

It appears, therefore, that he gave up the position of surgeon about 1765. If his indication of date of birth is a mistake for 1759, this was at about age 6. It seems more likely that his own indication 1749 is correct. --Mike Shepherd (talk) 15:40, 15 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Anglo-Indian?[edit]

I'm wondering about the use of "Anglo-Indian" here. While the term can refer to Indians with an Anglo (British) parent, there's no reference to such a parent in the article. It also seems like the third sense of the term, which would refer to Sake Dean Mahomed is rather out of date. Ethnicity[edit]

@UserNumber: Hi, I can see that on this article you have added multiple mentions of him being "Bengali". However from all the sources I have seen (and now added to the article), he has described himself as a native of Patna and of India.

I can see you have also included mention of him in other articles describing him as a "Bengali Muslim" which is not an accurate characterisation from the sources. Do you have access to any sources that mention him as ethnically Bengali as you have been portraying or is this a case of original research? If you have access to this source then why have you not included this in the article?

@Ixudi Straightforward WP:V issue, really. If UserNumber isn't providing sources, here and anywhere else, then their edits should be reverted and a warning left on their talk page. He is bengali. There are plenty of articles about him being bengali and sources out there. It doesnt matter where he was born and he is still bengali and related to Nawab of Bengal. Problem with indian people from different region are jealous and wana change history and want the credit cause the smartest and achievement of first people are Bengalis and that has influenced 70% to whole India and everyone wants to steal bengalis rich achivement history. He is Bengali and stop changing history and his identity. There are indians from different regions wana steal bengali history and wants the credit[edit]

He is bengali. There are plenty of articles about him being bengali and sources out there. It doesnt matter where he was born and he is still bengali and related to Nawab of Bengal. As per the primary sources detailed in the article, he referred to himself as a “native of Patna”. This is all he has written about his ethnicity. The onus is on you to show that he has called himself a Bengali. You need to provide a primary source showing this. Please also be mindful of WP:BRD and WP:STATUSQUO when removing sourced content. as you mentioned he was "native to Patna" and Patna was part of Bengal before 1912. He is 100% bengali and it doesnt change his ethnic at all.

These are secondary sources. Please understand the difference between primary and secondary sources. Secondly, of the sources provided, Muslimheritage and Daily Hawker are unreliable and the Banglapedia article does not mention him to be Bengali.

You must correct this or wikipedia will be taken to court for misinformation of change of history by Bengal President from India from Bengal region and Bangladesh for damaging the Bengalis rich heritage history of famous bengali figures. Bengal213x (talk) 20:31, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
