Is the mention in the McDonalds ad really as good as it gets in Daventry? Please tell me something more noteworthy has happened there...? -- Francs2000 | Talk 01:56, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The first experiment with Radar was carried out there, and the BBC World Service used to be broadcast from there, how about that?. Daventry's a pleasant enough town but "Daventry" and "exciting" are unfortunately not two words that are often found together in a sentence. G-Man 22:37, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It should be noted that the Moot Hall, which was the town's museum, was converted into an Indian restaurant called The Moot Hall Indian in 2006. The place seems to do better trade than its main rival, Papadoms. But this maybe on account of the latter being situated directly above a funeral directors.

"In 2006 the Outdoor pool, funded by residents of Daventry after children drowned in the local resevoir, was closed due to lack of cash for upkeep. In 2007 Daventry began plans to modernise the town ... to increase shops and tourism with non-existant historical features. These ideas have caused much controversy with the majority of residents strongly opposing the plans, claiming it is a waste of money and contradicts the reasoning of the outdoor pool's existance and closure. Nevertheless, the plans continue to go ahead regardless of what the public thinks." Sounds like a disgruntled local resident. Daventry in the English Civil War[edit]

Added a bit more detail about Daventry's role in the ECW and what happened afterwards (it directs leads to the Battle of Naseby) - including the well-known legend about Charles I being visited by a ghost at the Wheatsheaf Inn Praise God Barebones (talk) 15:18, 31 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pronounciation[edit]

In Eric Partridge's wonderful book Usage and Abusage. A Guide to Good English, he notes the old pronounciations of various places in England. One of these is Daventry - and he states that it was once common (especially locally) to pronounce it as dane-tree. Perhaps this is worth noting in the main article?! Suggestions for improvement[edit]

Thinking of ways to improve this article. I would say that much of the material on the parish church and moot hall etc be moved to their own articles, with a summary on the main article, which would be in a new section called say 'Notable buildings and landmarks' created to list the town's more notable buildings. Attempts to use Wikipedia to promote the idea of another station for Daventry at Weedon Bec[edit]

Although Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that anyone may edit, it is a fundamental principle that it only contains credible, reliably sourced information. Among the many things that WP:Wikipedia is not, it is not a campaign or publicity platform. The wikipedia policy WP:Advocacy states:

Advocacy the use of Wikipedia to promote personal beliefs or agendas at the expense of Wikipedia's goals and core content policies, including verifiability and neutral point of view. Despite the popularity of Wikipedia, it is not a soapbox to use for editors' activism, recruitment, promotion, advertising, announcements, or other forms of advocacy.

If the idea of another station for Daventry (at Weedon Bec or wherever) ever attracts credible support – for example being adopted by West Northamptonshire Council as part of its formal transport objectives (which is being claimed but never cited) – then and only then can it go in the article.
