Redirect is not appropriate here

Darlington is currently redirected to this particular article about a city specific to England. Though I'm sure it's a lovely city, Darlington refers to too many other things to deserve redirection to this page. Especially since there are several other cities with this name, and Darlington England doesn't carry the same city name value of say, Paris, France. If there is to be any redirection, it should go to the Darlington transistor. This is what people worldwide will be looking for most. Ace Frahm 02:53, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

You moved it to the wrong name Darlington, County Durham would have been more appropriate. I have restored the Doncaster redirect to here until the links are correctly bypassed and this article is named properly. Regan123 23:36, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
What's a darlington transistor? I moved it back here because I see no consensus to move the page. If it is to be moved then it must be done correctly and "Darlington (England)" is not the correct place. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 17:07, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Town or borough?

Should there be two entries, one for the town of Darlington itself and another for the borough of Darlington? This has been done with Stockton-on-Tees (the town) and Stockton-on-Tees (borough) (the borough/Unitary authority area) and since borough includes a significant number of settlements, such as Hurworth-on-Tees, High Coniscliffe & Middleton St George in the surrounding area that are not part of Darlington itself it would make things clearer. "Darlington Dog Show has been a Championship event since 1969, and is ranked second only to Crufts.". I have not found any evidence of the ranking, is this confirmed by an official source?

I have a note (source unknown) that Darlington Dog Show is the second LARGEST after Crufts. Can anyone confirm?

Firstly please assume good faith, secondly Mike Patterson does not appear to be notable as I'm sure you are aware. Several editors over a long period of time have removed these edits and this does not constitute vandalism. However as I have noted on your talk page you are in breach of the three revert rule. If you want to add Mike Patterson then you have to demonstrate his notability for inclusion - you can do this be creating an article for him and if it does not get deleted they are deemed notable. I'm appauled that due to someone not having a google source he is dubbed not real, I assure you my great uncle is infact a famous poet from Darlington, and I must insist you return his reference to the site Vic Reeves-Comedian and television presenter and more recently author.

While a bomb scare might be of local interest, local people will probably be already aware of it.

However, is this really of interest to the rest of the world? If we start listing every bomb scare in the UK even in the wake of the London Tube bombings there will be no room for anything else. Certainly, IIRC Darlington has had bomb scares in the past when the IRA were active.

I guess the same could be said for the Fireworks display. Without wishing to put it down, virtually every town, city, and village in the UK has a bonfire night display. It is natural to assume that the 4th most populace town in the north-east should have one of the best and most visited displays in the region.

Darlington Festival

I've removed this section for now as it read like an advert! I'd have replaced it with something less POV but I couldn't find any information online about it. Anyone else? NeonDaylight 23:31, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

Population of Town and Borough

If the Town of Darlington had 98,000, I really doubt the whole Borough has 98,600! One of them has to be wrong as the Town does not cover the whole Borough; :::dj_paul::: 01:22 07 July 2006 (UTC)

Team Darlington,
I have placed 2 population figures, one for the built up area/town, and one for the borough for clarification after an IP editor presumably mistakenly used the borough figure on the List of settlements in County Durham by population page. I have also added a reference. The figures also tally up with Office for National Statistics numbers. I'll add to the borough page also.

Cleveland Bridge Company

Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Company Limited is a renowned bridge building and structural engineering company based in Darlington, England. It was founded in 1877 and has been involved in major projects including the Victoria Falls Bridge, Forth Road, Severn Road, Istanbul and the Humber Bridges. The company has also built many power stations, steelworks and the Thames Barrier.

More recently the company was the contractor for the roof for the new Wembley Stadium.

In 1990, it merged with the Dorman Long group. In August 2000 a management buy-out of Cleveland Bridge took place establishing the business as independent group specialising in the design and construction of major bridges, buildings, refineries and offshore structures.

The company was once based in Smithfield Road and had areas of its widespread plant with World War 2 nicknames.

       The Bellman - a workshop where dving bells were fabricated for the military.

The above is a quote of the company's Wikipedia entry. Why is there nothing under Darlington itself? Am I missing something?

J. M. Dent

I've included Dent in the list of notables originating in the town. The list itself needs sorting out, but anyone doing this should consider Dent for inclusion in a more select group. Was Darlington Saxon or Angle?

When I was at school in the 50's and 60's, the teachers told us bairns that there was a SAXON burial site that had been found in Darlington, which was the earliest indication of any settlement.

The Kingdom of Northumbria, is known to have been founded and run by ANGLES from the early 6th Century for a few glorious centuries. (until their former Scandi neighbours caught up with them, with a little help extorted from the East Angles and East Saxons), so was the Darlington grave yard actually containing SAXON or ANGLE artifacts and bodies?

THANKS TO AN INTERNET ARTICLE: There was a late 6th Century ANGLE burial site found within the Greenbank estate, located somewhere between 200m-800m from the centre of town. This assumes the town centre was where the huge 12th Century riverside Saint Cuthbert's Norman church, was built - allegedly England's current biggest church, i.e not a cathedral or minster.

I don't know the bounds of the Greenbank estate at that time, even though I was born & bred in Greenbank Road, but naturally there may have been some settlement on the South East facing slope as this faced the town centre, and was relatively near to the then troutbeck & often flooded River Skerne, making it nearer to the town centre rather than further away, a vital factor in those war ravaged times.

Some 11th Century archeological SAXON burial finds were belatedly discovered in the 12th Century Norman church's graveyard and it's speculated that some earlier church & churchyard may have been demolished and built over. (It seems Anglo-Saxon history was again dismantled by a lack of Norman constraint)

The oldest church in England at Escomb near Bishop Auckland is said to be SAXON, so if that's accurate, then we maybe there was more of a mixed SAXON / ANGLE settlement in Southern Northumbria (Deiria) rather than a more ANGLE in Northern Northumbria (Bernicia), which may have offered some racial dividing line for splitting the rule of the Northumbrian Kingdom that occured from time to time.

But earlier.....

There was also a rumour in the 60's of a Roman villa, supposedly found and concreted over sharpish, during the building of the then new Co-op store foundations in Tubwell Row, located on what is now part of the Cornmill shopping mall.

This may be more than an a made up dig (pardon the pun) at the council, as there was for many years a well in that part of Tubwell Row and Romans for religous & sanitary reasons liked to build their mansions & temples at such water sources.

The difference between Saxons and Angles is too big a question for here, sufficient to say that in the past "Saxon" was used to refer to the Old English - Angles or otherwise - and this usage is still current when referring to Old English churches. In a similar vein the old Darlington Grammar Schoo had houses called Britons, Dane, Normans, and Saxons - Angles were ommited. UnaDormienda (talk) 22:59, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

Names of the Darlington Denes

These were the Greenbank Road & area kids' names for the Cocker Beck Denes, we used from the 50's to 70's.

There didn't seem to be any official names that anyone used for the denes, that are usually named locally by each dene between the road tunnels.

Are there other versions (ancient or modern)?
