Darcy Hadfield[edit]

Records of the Waitemata Boating CLub founded 1883 (Auckland NZ. Later to become the Waitemata Rowing Club Inc.to the present time) Darcy showed his meteoric rise winning a handicap race by 7 sec, going on to finishing up winning his first Red Coat in the 1912/13 season in a single scull in Wellington. His name appears in the Clubs records 1910/11 season rowing 3 in a 4 oared boat. He went to win many more single sculling handicap events up to 1915 when he joined the Army fighting in France. After WW1 whilst still in England he became part NZ Army team and crewed in several boats as well as the single scull. The records show that he was placed 1st in eight events with the Army, all of which were in a single scull, except for one an 8. One of these latter events while in the Army was the Royal Henley Regatta - Kingswood (Diamond) Sculls (1919/20) which he won. His last Army event was the Pershing Games Paris 1919/20 again with 1st place in the sculling event. Darcy on his return home for a season, before turning professional winning the World Sculling title (1922/23). He remained a member of the Club for the rest of his life.
