One Child[edit]

"Aragorn descended from a long line of only children." This does not sound right. Is it supposed to read "long line of only one child"? DrSlump 17:02, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Use of the term[edit]

I am interested in a discussion of to whom the term Dunedain/Dunadan applies. The articles here at Wikipedia largely imply that only after the Numenorean exiles reached Middle-earth in the late Second Age did they start being referred to as Dunedain. Yet there are instances in 'Unfinished Tales' where Tolkien referred to the Dunedain 'of Numenor'. I have no recollection of ever reading that the term only applied to the Numenoreans after they came back to Middle-earth. --Sephiroth9611 (talk) 17:38, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It might also be useful to slightly alter the article to acknowledge that the Dunedain in Middle-earth were descended not only from the survivors of the destruction of Numenor, but also from Numenorian settlements that had been made prior to the downfall. Without the books in front of me, I can't make the edit at this moment in good faith. But I clearly recall at least two passages in canonical literature where Tolkien comments that the number of Numenorian settlers in Middle-earth was greater than that of Elendil's survivors; and that those in the northwest (to include what became Gondor) were chiefly comprised of the faithful whereas those further south were Kings Men and became the Black Numenorians. This would help explain how Arnor and Gondor were able to create such strong realms so quickly and field so large an army during the Last Alliance; there was a large, extant population already in Middle-earth. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.33.208.179 (talk) 10:25, 14 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
