Examples from Around the World[edit]

This section needs to be re-written to include actual examples of collaborative learning around the world. Editing Differences from Cooperative Learning[edit]

From the Kyndt meta-analysis on cooperative learning, it shows that not all people view cooperative learning and collaborative learning as distinct learning methods and even if people agree there are differences, there is debate regarding what the differences are. I want to show the different views on the similarities and collaborative learning. Lklee1227

Removing criticism[edit]

I'm going to remove the "criticisms" section for the time being. While it is true that these are common fears of collaborative learning, the section as it is currently written does not paint a very fair (nor referenced) picture of the actual debate (i.e., it isn't that people who work with collaborative methods don't know about these objections, or that there aren't ways for these objections to be worked around). Further, with out sources, it is hard to discuss some of this (e.g., Johnson and Johnson have noted that there is no research to indicate that high-performing students do not benefit from collaborative learning and that there is compelling evidence on the other side...what evidence does the current "criticisms" section have against this?).

Of course, this is all debatable, but it is better to have it here on the talk page than on the entry page where things that may or may not be true might pass as truth. matthew 01:49, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So you agree those are the standard criticisms, yet you removed the section anyway? Just rewrite it to improve it, don't delete it unless you can show they are outright wrong. It's been so long since I've read anything on the topic I don't have any sources handy, but

Criticism section[edit]

This article needs a criticisms section. From the discussion above it seems like there used to be one. Perhaps some discussion of the relative effectiveness of collaborative learning. Collaborative Scripts Section[edit]

There has been a lot of research on collaborative scripts. Since they are such a large part of collaborative learning, this section may want to be fleshed out. One way to flesh out the section is to discuss the difference between scripts that are implemented dynamically or statically. Another thing that could be discussed in this section are the limitations to scripting such as over scripting and the impact this can have on learning. Jenno0101 17:36, 15 September 2012

Cultural Variations/Practices/Examples[edit]

I'd like to add a new section titled something along the lines of cultural practices or examples to input some information of how collaborative learning occurs in indigenous communities of the Americas. I have five+ sources for these ideas and really believe that this information would be beneficial to this page. As of now I'm feeling that the way the page is written "collaborative learning" seems more 'work-place', 'classroom' focused information. More specifically, it would be a section focused on cultural examples of collaborative learning, then why it's important and possibly another section on how it differs from other cultures (specifically indigenous communities vs. western classroom models). A couple of sources that confirm these differences and these instances of collaborative learning are coming from Mariëtte de Haan, Ruth Paradise, Barbara Rogoff, Susan Urmstom Philips. Also want to clarify that because this deal with pedagogical practice, I'm thinking this information should go here and not in "learning communities" Thoughts?
