I tried to make a logical overview of:

- Prof. Hugo Strunz (Mineralogische Tabellen, 1941), followed by A.S. Povarennykh (1966 in Russian, 1972 in English) and (Nickel-Strunz Version 10) Ernest H. Nickel.
Mindat.org groupings

Strunz does not use the grouping names. Anything can be rationalized theoretically (New Dana), so I just sorted the groupings used in the practice (mindat.org). As we get a better knowledge, old undifferentiated names as apatite get sorted out: Chlorapatite, Fluorapatite, Hydroxylapatite. The groupings change with time to: categories, classes, supergroups, groups, subgroups and series. The chemical formula, the crystal cell dimensions, the streak, the hardness and the density characterize quite well a crystal. --Chris.urs-o (talk) 08:06, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
