Controversy[edit]

Cincom has spent the last few years ramping up their legal department, resulting in multiple lawsuits and expensive settlements for their current customers and partners. While I understand that the parties themselves are not a good sources of information for a Wiki article, it would certainly be great if someone impartial had the insight to write a "controversy" section of this description. Cincoms current legal tactics are extremely (!) aggressive and they have a lot of unhappy partners and customers as a result. This article is ghastly. It reads from beginning to end as it if was written by the marketing department. One specimen: "Cincom launches its award-winning e-magazine Expert Access". Yuk. Mhkay (talk) 20:45, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

OK, it may look Yuk, and I replaced CINCOM quotes with non-Cincom sources. But please do understand, that with "over $100 million" per year, for 21 years, they can afford to buy software companies that "do" SMALL-TALK, C-Compilers, statistical packages, and anything that the Microsofties don't buy. So what's a few million extra to have lawyers watch their back.

When they were busy copying IBM by getting universities to teach a database course by offering a free copy of their TOTAL software, IBM's only major competition in this type of sugar-coated marketing were offering free or low-cost HARDWARE - software was ignored, and hence - what's a $100 Million per year got to do with it. No need to ADVERT-HatNote the article, just find better wordings and/or sources. Even if they slightly exaggerate, being first has advantages, and they were FIRST more than just once or twice. A better handle[edit]

While more work could certainly make this a better article, the situation I encountered made it seem like the TOTAL people of the 1970s were too much larger than life ("PEACOCK" HatNote). A bit of Googling for the products that I left, after doing some trimming back, showed that Cincom, while neither a Microsoft nor an IBM, had much about which to brag. IBM, in fact did some of this for them- decades after Cincom's founder left IBM. The cited Smithsonian interview, http://americanhistory.si.edu/comphist/nies.htm, is worth reading.
