Meaning of parenthetic phrase?[edit]

On the content page, there is a parenthetical statement: "(diarrhea resulting from malabsorption of the fats in food, typically very bad-smelling and equally hard on the patient)". I'm unclear on the meaning of "equally hard on the patient".
