Surname exclusivity[edit]

While Chopra surname is prominent among khatris, it seems that there are other communities which use the surname too . I am unable to verify that Chopra surname is exclusive only to Khatris in the reference Oxford Dictionary of Family Names in Britain and Ireland provided in the article. Moreover, there are articles which hint that the surname can be present in other communities like the hindustan times article presents Neeraj Chopra as a Ror. Different communities having the same surname is not uncommon in Indian context , example being the case of Chauhan , a surname present both among Rajput and Gurjars Piyushkumar911 (talk) 16:26, 8 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I was not able to find Chopra in the book Oxford Dictionary of Family Names in Britain and Ireland as it was not searchable but Hightilldeath says that it's present in page 500. So, even as per the book Ramgarhia Sikhs have Chopra clan. Now, the reference is supposed to be dictionary of Family names in Britain and Ireland so I am not sure how up to date the content of the book is in regards to surname usage in India but there's a high chance that the limitation of Chopra surname to Khatris and Ramgarhia Sikhs in the book might be because of sampling bias as these two communities may constitute the entirety of immigrants with Chopra surname to the UK . I know people with Chopra surname who are neither Punjabi Khatris nor Ramgarhia Sikhs but since my anecdote isn't enough of an evidence, I gave a reference to a news article in the above paragraph where Neeraj Chopra has been claimed as belonging to the Ror community. Ohnoitsjamie , how do we deal with this ambiguity ? Would like a discussion here.

I was able to (with some patience) navigate to page 500, and confirmed that the text is there. I'm not sure how reliable an Oxford Dictionary; evaluating the "reliability" of sources regarding castes/clans is an ongoing problem. I don't believe the current wording implies that the name is exclusive to the two mentioned groups. I doubt that a reference about one individual's community membership could be used here as a reference; it belongs on that individual's page, if anywhere.OhNoitsJamie ^Talk 14:07, 9 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
