The above article does not suport the view that cholesteatomas are neoplastic. A quote from the conclusion : "Cholesteatoma is a wound-healing process rather than a neoplastic lesion. Research to date does not indicate any genetic instability in cholesteatomas, which is a critical feature of malignant lesions."

Cholesteatoma was first described by the famous Dublin eye surgeon Sir William Wilde. His son, the writer Oscar Wilde, unfortunately died as a result of a cholesteatoma!!
