This is one of a series of 32 articles about Fellows of the Royal Society that were erroneously deleted on the grounds of notability. Only leading scientists can become Fellows of the Royal Society and all have long since met the requirements of our Notability (academics) guideline by the time they become fellows.

Are there independent and reliable references which support the assertion that every single "Fellow" in the history of the Society was a distinguished scientist? Asserting it does not constitute proof. It was not always the case that only "leading scientists " could ever become Fellows. The society's own history [1] speaks of the vague criteria for membership in the early years, and of the admission of "wealthy amateurs" mostly for their likely donations in the 1820's. Nice improvements to the article, by the way. Would that people would take the time to create an article with some content rather than making Wikipedia a sparse mirror of some membership directory or other.
