The "same root" rule[edit]

Has anybody ever established how exactly "same root" was defined? I suppose that, given that Chambers tends to list compound and derived words under the entry of the root word, rather than as separate entries, being listed under the same entry is a plausible way of doing it. But in the case of homonyms with separate entries, what would happen? For example, "soundless" and "soundest" are derivatives of "sound" meaning that which we hear and "sound" meaning "healthy" or "in good judgement" respectively. Do these two meanings constitute different roots, thereby allowing a point to be scored for each? — Smjg (talk) 12:24, 22 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
